- New game from Korean 4-person development team Dopamine Crusian to be released for free on Steam on July 31
- Puzzle-style strategic gameplay completed by placing cards on a grid and directional signals draws attention
Korean four-person indie game development team Dopamine Crucian will release the grid-based turn-based deck-building roguelite ‘ON&OFF’ for free on Steam on July 31.
ON&OFF is a unique deck-building roguelite where you place magic cards on a grid and connect them with directional signals to engage in battle.
The biggest difference of the game is that it features a deck building method inspired by ‘Slay the Spire’ and that used cards do not disappear but remain on the field, repeatedly activating by switching between ON and OFF states.
The card that never disappears, the chain reaction created by the signal
The core of the game is ‘reusable cards’ and ‘directional signals’.
Cards remain on the grid even after use and can be reactivated multiple times during combat. In particular, whenever the card switches from OFF to ON, its unique effect is triggered, and a signal is transmitted in the direction of the arrow indicated on the card.
This signal re-switches the state of surrounding cards and sequentially reactivates already used cards to create combos. As a result, the battle outcome varies depending on the card placement, arrow direction, and activation order, creating a strategic element akin to a spatial puzzle.
The fun of piecing together card combinations like designing a circuit
The development team describes ON&OFF as a work that originated from the idea of a “combination of deck-building card games and circuit design.” With each play (run), players acquire new cards, attempt various combinations, and configure the grid in a different way every time.
In particular, the design ensures that the flow of signals and the card reactivation process are intuitively expressed, helping players easily understand strategies while enabling them to make in-depth choices. This presentation serves to further emphasize the core fun of the game: chain triggers and combo design.
A 4-person Korean indie development team … building anticipation before release
The developer Dopamine Crusian is a four-person indie game team based in Korea.
ON&OFF is a pre-release title currently accepting wishlist registrations on the Steam Store page. Although user reviews and sales figures have not yet been disclosed, the fact that Krafton Jungle Game Lab is handling the publishing raises expectations for a certain level of quality.
ON&OFF, featuring an experimental system that combines cards and circuit design, is a prime example of the unique creativity characteristic of indie games. As it goes beyond simple deck building to introduce new variables such as ‘placement’ and ‘connection,’ attention is focused on what kind of results it will achieve through word of mouth after its official release.
