- Brazilian indie developer Potato Kid launches first beta for new title ahead of official release in 2027
- African and Brazilian mythology recreated with hand-drawn art, roguelite action with the Orisha gods
- Beta applications accepted on PlayAcclaim Discord from July 16 to 30… Entering the user verification phase
Registration for the closed beta of ‘Talaka’, a roguelike action game being co-developed by Brazilian indie studio Potato Kid and publisher Acclaim, has begun.
Talaka is a hand-painted roguelite action game based on Afro-Brazilian mythology. It features dreamy, watercolor-inspired visuals and fast-paced combat utilizing the powers of the Orisha gods.
The game depicts the journey of a young warrior tracking down the reason why a forgotten myth began to disrupt the balance of the world.
A journey to find the truth within forgotten myths
The player embarks on an adventure as a young warrior who once believed in the Orisha gods and the legends of the ancient world. As time passes, the myths fade from people’s memories, and the legends begin to become distorted, threatening to disrupt the balance of the world.
Players must borrow the power of Orisha to fight against corrupted spirits, twisted legends, and celestial beasts, and uncover the truth behind the myth’s rampage. The game enhances immersion by adding myth-centric storytelling to a roguelite structure characterized by repetitive combat and exploration.
The atmosphere created by hand-painted visuals and dreamy sound
The most distinctive feature of Talaka is its hand-painted graphics that look as if they were drawn by hand. In a world depicted in vibrant colors, ancient gods, giant monsters, and mysterious magic coexist, creating a unique atmosphere.
Even during fast-paced battles, the backgrounds and effects maintain the distinctive texture of hand-drawn art, emphasizing a mythical atmosphere. Additionally, percussion and vocal-centric sounds inspired by African and Brazilian mythology are added to convey both the tension of combat and a mysterious worldview.
Closed beta to run for two weeks starting July 16
The closed beta will run for two weeks from July 16 to 30, and you can experience the game’s first two worlds.
Users who wish to participate can apply through the #talaka-beta-request channel on the official PlayAcclaim Discord server by July 16. The operations team will then grant access, and access rights to the game and detailed instructions will be provided on the beta start date.
Paulo Luis Santos, CEO of Potato Kid, said, “I am very pleased to be able to receive feedback from players. User opinions will be of great help in improving the quality of the game, as they allow us to examine aspects that are easily overlooked during the development process from a fresh perspective.”
“As players ourselves who enjoy the roguelite genre, we are well aware of how important balance is,” they added. “Based on the data and feedback obtained from the beta, we will continue to refine the game to provide a fair and enjoyable gaming experience from the early stages to the late game.”
Continued anticipation following the first reveal in 2025
Talaka garnered attention when it was first unveiled at last year’s PlayAcclaim showcase. The new trailer released alongside this closed beta offers a preview of a world where Orisha gods, colossal monsters, and dazzling magic coexist.
As the official launch has not yet taken place, reviews and sales figures have not been disclosed; however, user feedback gathered through this beta is expected to play a crucial role in improving the game’s balance and content quality in the future.
Talaka is a reinterpretation of Afro-Brazilian mythology featuring unique hand-painted visuals and roguelite action. With development underway aiming for a release on major platforms including Steam in early 2027, attention is focused on whether this closed beta will not only elevate the game’s quality but also establish its presence as an indie roguelite dealing with an uncommon theme.
