- A micro-world-set roguelike shooting game where you battle the immune system with 7 types of pathogens
- Recorded a 98% ‘Very Positive’ rating upon launch on July 16, continuing the positive reception since the demo stage.
Developer Aberrant Labs and publisher Slug Disco officially released the micro-world-set roguelike shooting game ‘Pathogenic’ on Steam on July 16.
Pathogenic is a 2D top-down roguelike shooting game where the player becomes the disease itself and fights against the human immune system. Players select one of seven pathogens inspired by real biology and evolve into their own unique form by combining over 120 types of cellular organelles and mutations.
Immediately after its release, the game recorded a ‘very positive’ rating of 98% (based on 86 reviews) in Steam user reviews, and the Steam Next Fest demo held earlier also received positive reviews from 97% of the 715 reviews, proving high expectations even before its release.
Organic action created by hand-drawn visuals and soft body physics
Fascogenic features hand-drawn micro-world visuals and organic movements based on soft-body physics simulations. The international media outlet DayOne commented, “The immune cells are excellently rendered with a lifelike, squishy texture.”
Furthermore, the music changes with each stage and heavy beats enhance immersion. In particular, the rhythm-linking system, which deals additional damage when attacking in time with the beat, is cited as an element that closely integrates sound and combat. The gaming media outlet PC Gamer also evaluated it as “the title that best realizes the potential of the cellular level that Spore failed to demonstrate.”
Procedurally generated levels traversing the interior of body organs
The game consists of six levels that are newly configured each time, and battles take place against the backdrop of various human organs such as the intestines, lungs, and heart. Players must dodge bullet patterns created by macrophages and T cells while competing against or fighting against other pathogens.
Even after defeating the final boss, there are secret levels that can only be entered by meeting specific conditions, and a total of 15 additional challenge modes are provided to enhance the fun of replay.
Positive reviews since the demo… Optimization considering even the SteamDeck environment draws attention
Passogenic also draws attention for the positive reception it has received since the Steam Next Fest demo stage. A DayOne reviewer commented, “I was drawn to the unique concept, but the polished gameplay loop kept me playing.”
It also demonstrates a high level of completeness in terms of performance optimization. The game runs stably without frame rate drops even on low-spec PCs, and supports comfortable gameplay in various environments by providing a ‘Fast’ mode tailored for Steam Deck and portable PC environments, as well as separate physics options.
A micro-world roguelike completed by a two-person development team
Aberrant Labs, the developer of Pathogenic, is a two-person indie development team. This work is considered a result that demonstrates both the team’s technical skills and planning capabilities, as they implemented over 120 types of cellular organelles, 7 types of pathogens, and multiple procedurally generated levels with a small team.
The game is also being sold as a bundle that includes the original soundtrack and concept art book, and the bundle comes with a 40% launch discount.
