Memories of growth recorded by a father’s hand, narrative indie ‘Hold’ Steam page revealed

    By Editorial Team2026년 05월 16일5 Mins Read
    • A new emotional narrative title from Japanese indie studio Sense of Games Inc.
    • From birth to growth… A short yet profound story capturing the relationship between parents and children

The moment you first hold a child’s hand, the memory of holding them in your arms, and the time spent watching them take their first steps on their own.

Japanese indie game studio Sense of Games Inc. has released the Steam store page and official trailer for ‘Held,’ a narrative game that captures a child’s growth from a parent’s perspective.

Held is a short narrative game that captures the birth and growth of a child seen through a father’s eyes, as well as the small, precious moments that pass by in between. Choosing the warmth of everyday life over flashy adventures or dramatic events, this work delicately and warmly portrays the textures of emotions that any parent can relate to.

The release date and price are not yet determined, and it is planned to support 10 languages, including Korean, English, Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, and Italian.

A story that begins with holding hands

Held is a short narrative game that allows players to experience a child’s birth, growth, and ordinary daily life through the eyes of a father. As a father, the player connects with their child through simple and intuitive actions, such as holding the child’s hand, holding them in their arms, and being by their side the moment they take their first steps.

The game quietly follows how the relationship between parents and children changes over time. As small actions such as feeding, putting the child to sleep, and gently pinching their cheek accumulate, the child grows little by little, and the interaction between the player and the child changes accordingly.

In particular, the game captures not only parental ‘care’ but also the emotion of stepping back and watching so that the child can move forward on their own. It quietly conveys the message that it is enough to simply stay by the child’s side, resisting the urge to reach out when the child tries to walk on their own.

The warmth of everyday life conveyed through restrained visuals and sound

Held expresses the emotions between parents and children through restrained visuals, without flashy direction or exaggeration. Rather than vibrant colors or complex staging, it captures everyday family scenes using warm hues and soft forms; the released trailer impressively features simple yet deeply moving images, such as the scene where a child’s small hand meets a father’s large hand.

The sound design also focuses on everyday sensations. Instead of a grand orchestra, it utilizes the sounds of a quiet room, a child’s breathing, and gentle background music to create an immersive experience, making the player feel as though they are dwelling in that moment. The overall atmosphere is calm and contemplative, focusing on delivering a deep emotional resonance and warm resonance even within a short playtime.

    Between ‘caring’ and ‘waiting’

What distinguishes Held from other parenting and growth-themed games is the way it balances ‘intervention’ and ‘waiting’ through gameplay.

Much like the moment when a child attempts to take their first steps on their own and the player must watch without intervening, the game allows players to directly experience the complex emotions of parents feeling affection while simultaneously cheering for their child’s independence. The core of this work lies in its structure, which allows players to personally witness the process of the child becoming increasingly less dependent on their parents over time.

Developer Sense of Games Inc.: 80 Million Downloads Know-how with Emotion

Sense of Games Inc., a Japan-based indie game studio, is a proven developer that has recorded over 80 million total downloads, focusing on hypercasual and mobile platforms.

Based on game design experience accumulated in the mainstream mobile market, the developer is venturing into a new direction with this title, exploring more personal and emotional themes. The project is also noteworthy for being entirely self-developed and published by the studio, focusing on conveying authentic emotions rather than commercial success.

We captured the emotions of becoming a parent in a game.

As the trailer was released along with the unveiling of the store page, the community reacted quickly. In particular, among parent gamers, comments such as “It is touching that a game like this exists” and “I teared up just watching the trailer” followed one after another, and the game garnered widespread empathy for seriously addressing the rare themes of parenting and parent-child relationships.

Indie game media outlets are noting this shift in direction by a hypercasual game developer toward such introspective themes as an interesting move, and are focusing their attention on how deeply emotional an experience can be delivered within a short playtime.

Even though the release date and price have not yet been revealed, wishlist additions continue steadily, raising expectations that it will capture the attention of indie game fans after its official launch.
