- Collaboration between Italian indie developer and Japanese animation studio, launching on July 13
- From physical Game Boy Color to Steam, a Greek mythology adventure that captivated retro fans
- Achieved more than double its Kickstarter goal… 80s Chibi vibes and a unique Lyra battle system
In Greek mythology, the legendary bard Orpheus heads to the underworld to reclaim his deceased lover, Eurydice. His weapon is not a sword or a spear, but a lyre. An indie game based on the myth that he moved even the gods of Hades with a single beautiful melody is being released on Steam.
ORPHEUS: TO HELL AND BACK, co -developed by Italian indie developers Studio Loading and Kibou Entertainment and published by Tokyo-based animation studio Alunite Inc., will be released on PC (Steam) on July 13.
The game garnered attention from retro game fans when it was first released on a physical Game Boy Color cartridge prior to its Steam launch, and later became a hot topic on Kickstarter by raising over 16,000 euros, more than double its target amount. You can experience the game’s features in advance through the free demo currently available on Steam.
Greek mythology reinterpreted with 8-bit chibi anime sensibility
The first eye-catching element of Orpheus: To Hell and Back is the 8-bit pixel art reminiscent of 1980s chibi animation. Set against the backdrop of ancient Greek temples and Hades’ underworld, Orpheus and mythological figures are brought to life with cute and distinctive dot graphics. The visuals, which turn the technical limitations of retro hardware into unique characteristics, further clarify the game’s identity.
The sound is inextricably linked to the game’s core mechanics. Three melodies flowing from Orpheus’s lyre serve as the keys to combat and puzzles, while original chiptune music completes the overall atmosphere of the game. It feels as though the grandeur of ancient mythology and the nostalgia of 80s retro games coexist exquisitely over 8-bit sound. As you descend deeper into the underworld, the music becomes darker and more urgent, naturally heightening the tension of the puzzles and action.
Enchant, lull to sleep, drive away… Lyre melody-based combat and puzzles
The core of the game is a combat system utilizing music. Players can control enemies in different ways by playing three different melodies of the lyre.
The first melody charms enemies to turn them into allies, while the second puts them to sleep, immobilizing them. The final melody instills fear, causing enemies to flee, which can be used to lure them into traps or specific locations. Even against the same enemy, the strategy changes depending on which melody is used, and this choice influences how to solve the puzzles in each stage.
Another feature is the natural connection between combat and puzzles. Rather than simply defeating enemies, you must utilize status changes to create paths or solve puzzles. A single melody can be utilized in various ways, such as using sleeping enemies as stepping stones, dealing with other enemies through charmed ones, or luring fleeing enemies to step on switches.
From Game Boy cartridges to Steam… A development philosophy that insisted on retro vibes
Studio Loading is an Italian indie studio that aims to revive the sensibilities of the classic era, known as the ‘Golden Age’ of gaming, in the modern era.
Orpheus: To Hell and Back was also released first as a physical Game Boy Color cartridge prior to its Steam release. The fact that a modern indie developer produced and released a physical cartridge for retro hardware generated significant buzz within the retro gaming community.
Alunite Inc., the publisher, is an animation creative studio based in Tokyo, Japan. They specialize in 2D animation, storyboarding, and art direction, and have a track record of participating in the production of various Japanese animations, including ‘The Apothecary’s Monologue’, ‘Digimon Beat Break’, and ‘Pokémon’.
Co-developer Kibou Entertainment is also an Italian indie studio. They have experience collaborating with PLAYISM and Kadokawa, and consistently release works that combine the sensibilities of classic games with modern game design.
Double the Kickstarter goal… Retro fans’ expectations
The game demonstrated high interest from retro game fans by raising over 16,000 euros on Kickstarter, more than double its target amount. It is believed that the game received a positive response due to the rarity of the physical Game Boy Color cartridge, as well as its unique world based on Greek mythology and a music-based combat system utilizing a lyre.
Users who tried the Steam demo have left reviews stating, “The puzzles and combat utilizing lyre melodies are simple yet strategic,” and “The 1980s chibi animation vibe and Greek mythology surprisingly go well together.”
The game supports English and Japanese, and as it is being published by Alunite Inc., a company active in the Japanese animation industry, it is gradually attracting attention in the Japanese retro game market.
