- A healing life simulation where you enjoy four seasons of farming, exploration, and interaction with residents.
- Online multiplayer for up to 4 players added, simultaneously released on all PC and console platforms
Seed Sparkle Lab, a game developer based in Zhuhai, China, released the official version 1.0 of the anime-style healing life simulation game ‘Starsand Island ‘ on August 18.
‘Starland Island’, which was first revealed through Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview last February, has expanded its platforms to PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S with this official release.
In particular, version 1.0 includes online multiplayer that up to four people can enjoy together, expanded relationship content and character interactions, and new stories and quests set in the autumn season.
Leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind, experience sun-drenched island life
‘Starland Island’ is a life simulation game where you enjoy a leisurely rural life set against the backdrop of an island where dazzling sunshine, cool sea breezes, and beautiful natural scenery harmonize.
Players become new island residents, freely exploring every corner of the island, interacting with various inhabitants, and building friendships with cute animals such as capybaras, cats, and dogs. The core gameplay involves cultivating the island in your own unique way by mastering various life skills, including farming, fishing, crafting, livestock farming, and production.
A DIY building and interior system has also been provided, allowing you to construct and decorate your own home. Additionally, you can freely move around the island, such as riding a longboard along the coastline or zipping through the forest on a retro scooter, and enjoy lighthearted adventure elements like taking a boat to nearby islands to search for minerals, rare treasures, and the secrets of ancient ruins.
An island where the four seasons come alive, my own life completed by relationships and tastes
The game world is structured around the cycle of the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The changing seasons affect not only farming schedules but also overall life on the island, including exploration conditions and community events.
The rural life system, in which farming, crafting, livestock farming, fishing, and production are organically interconnected, is designed to become more streamlined as gameplay progresses. This notably allows players to focus on exploration, creation, and interaction with residents instead of spending excessive time on repetitive management.
Relationships with the residents are also a core element of the game. By continuously interacting with residents of different personalities and professions and building bonds, individual character storylines and various events unfold in sequence.
In addition, it offers a wide range of self-expression content, starting with character customization, as well as house construction and interior design, seasonal festivals, cooking, and fashion. Version 1.0 adds online multiplayer, allowing up to four players to explore and live on an island together, providing a level of fun that goes beyond the relaxing lifestyle enjoyed alone.
The ‘Autumn Pumpkin Carnival’ will also be held during the autumn season. This content includes an exclusive autumn-themed storyline and quests, which are expected to provide new seasonal entertainment.
From the ‘fake review’ controversy during early access to the official release
‘Starland Island’ was first released on Steam Early Access on February 11. However, immediately after its release, it became embroiled in an unusual controversy as a series of glowing reviews followed from accounts that had played for less than an hour.
At the time, the developer stated via their official Discord that they had discovered numerous overly positive reviews on various social platforms, suspecting them to be artificially written and requesting their discontinuation. It was an unusual case for a developer to publicly address the possibility of review manipulation and ask for the cessation of such activities, and the incident became a hot topic, with international media covering the story extensively.
Since then, the developer has continuously updated the game during the Early Access period to improve content and systems, and has expanded the scope of service to console platforms with this official 1.0 release.
Mixed reviews after official launch… “Attractive but still needs refinement”
As of the official release, evaluations of ‘Starland Island’ show both positive reactions and requests for improvement.
On Metacritic, it has a ‘Mixed or Average’ rating of 68 based on 6 critic reviews. On Steam, it has a ‘Very Positive’ rating with 86% of 2,603 English reviews being positive, but the positive rating has dropped to 47% in reviews from the last 30 days, resulting in a ‘Mixed’ rating.
GAMINGbible evaluated ‘Starland Island’ as an original work that combines the strengths of ‘Animal Crossing’, ‘Stardew Valley’, and ‘The Sims’ with a Studio Ghibli-style sensibility.
COGconnected assessed that the developers directly improved issues identified during Early Access through the 1.0 update. In particular, they highlighted positively the fact that the visual feedback in the farming and livestock systems has become clearer.
On the other hand, while citing rich content and authentic appeal as strengths, the Dutch media outlet GAMESTIC pointed out that some quest status bugs persist and minor performance issues detract from the game’s quality.
Overall, while the game continues to receive positive reviews for its rich content, charming visuals, and free-form lifestyle system, the fact that some bugs and optimization issues persist even after the official release is cited as a regrettable aspect.
‘Starland Island’ has expanded its reach to the console market with its official release, having gone through both the buzz and controversy of its early access phase. With the addition of up to four-player multiplayer and seasonal content, how quickly the developer fixes remaining bugs and optimization issues is expected to determine its long-term success.
