K-Indie Games Heat Up Steam Next Fest… Proving Their Presence Among Global Users

    By Editorial Team2026년 06월 18일7 Mins Read
    • Recommended by IndieGame.com: 6 Representative K-Indie Titles Selected for Steam Next Fest
    • A week-long global testing stage based on wishlists and user ratings
    • The diversity of genres stands out, ranging from puzzles and dungeon crawlers to extraction RPGs and mystery adventures.

The June 2026 edition of Steam Next Fest, a game experience event held three times a year by Valve, will take place from June 15 to 22 Pacific Standard Time.

It runs for a week from the 16th to 2:00 AM on the 23rd ( KST), and features over 4,000 new demos, marking the largest scale in history.

While the PlayStation State of Play, Xbox Game Showcase, and Summer Game Fest held in early June were stages centered on major new releases, the stars of Steam Next Fest are indie games that are not yet known to the world.

In particular, domestic indie developers have also launched new titles across various genres, entering the competition to secure the first reactions and wishlists of global users.

At this year’s Steam Next Fest, where thousands of new titles are showcasing their unique characteristics, which works are Korean indie developers using to captivate global users? IndieGame.com introduces six noteworthy representative K-indie games.

A puzzle that transforms space with light and shadow, ‘THANKS, LIGHT.’

‘THANKS, LIGHT.’ , currently under development by Writers Games, is a first-person 3D puzzle platformer that solves puzzles by switching objects between 2D and 3D states using the light and shadows of a flashlight.

Players illuminate the space to alter its structure, utilizing this to forge paths and solve puzzles. Thanks to its unique mechanics, it is garnering attention as a successor to the lineage of experimental puzzle games that includes ‘Portal’, ‘Superliminal’, and ‘Viewfinder’.

The developer, Writers Games, is a Korean indie team whose name means “people who shine a light,” and they have consistently showcased new ideas and experimental game designs. Some communities have already praised the game for its “intuitive yet deep puzzle design,” and the development team plans to prepare for the official release scheduled for September 2026 based on the feedback collected through this demo.

Dungeon Settlers, a dungeon crawler combining settlement and exploration

Canopener’s ‘Dungeon Settlers’ ‘ is a game that combines colony simulation and dungeon crawler. Players manage an exploration team, build settlements in wastelands, and send team members into dungeons to secure resources and ensure survival simultaneously.

Combat proceeds in a real-time pause system rather than a turn-based one. You must identify enemy behavior patterns and issue commands at the appropriate moment, and the Permadeath system, where members who die cannot return, adds to the tension.

In particular, it offers deep strategic gameplay featuring a diverse stat and talent system, weapon and magic skill trees, status effects, and highly flexible base construction elements. The game is currently under development with a target release date of September 10th on Steam Early Access.

The buzzworthy title ‘Void Diver’ that surpassed 150,000 on the wishlist

‘VOID DIVER: Escape from the Abyss’ by Nemo Studio, a subsidiary of Load Complete, is one of the most 주목받는 Korean indie games recently.

Players run an antique shop called ‘BALUSHA’ in a city overrun by anomalies and must send explorers called ‘Divers’ into the dungeons of the abyss to collect artifacts. The goal is to explore dungeons with a constantly changing structure in cooperative play with up to three players, secure valuable loot, and return safely.

The demo released in January of this year surpassed 50,000 wishlist items in just two weeks, and exceeded 150,000 just before the opening of Next Fest in June. User ratings are also currently 91% ‘Very Positive’.

This demo includes store operation and management systems, as well as Chapter 2 story content, and the development team is aiming for an Early Access release in the second half of this year.

If you don’t find the culprit, everyone loses, ‘Deadly Trick’

Final Blow’s ‘Deadly Trick’ ‘ is a subculture-style social deduction game enjoyed by 5 to 8 people together.

Players can investigate the crime scene and collect clues to deduce the culprit, or depending on the situation, they can become the culprit and deceive other players.

In particular, it features a unique rule where all innocent players lose if the culprit is not accurately identified. Furthermore, unexpected variables constantly arise, such as a hidden ‘mastermind’ interfering with the game or delivering a weapon to create a new culprit.

The unique abilities possessed by each character also add depth to the deduction and psychological warfare. The development team plans to incorporate user feedback collected through this demo into the upcoming Early Access and official versions.

    Vintage cartoon-style roguelike, ‘Pengpong’

Sandy Floor’s ‘PengPong’ ‘ is an action roguelike in which retired penguin hockey player ‘Peng’ fights against a group of unidentified monsters.

The basic structure is a bullet hell shooter in the style of ‘Vampire Survivor,’ but the differentiating factor is the vintage cartoon-style visuals reminiscent of animations from the 1930s to the 1980s. The cute character designs and violent action create a peculiar contrast, producing a unique atmosphere.

This work originated from a prototype called ‘Pinball Survival’ during an in-house game jam. Since then, it has steadily gained recognition through events such as the Tokyo Game Show and the Busan Indie Connect Festival (BIC), and is currently in the final stages of development with the goal of releasing it in the third quarter of this year, with the addition of new regions and content.

A forensic mystery adventure, ‘The Death at Fleming Manor’

SuperThumb’s ‘Death at Fleming Manor’ is a mystery adventure game centered on forensic science.

Players must personally examine the bodies at the crime scene and analyze the cause and condition of death to uncover the truth of the case. While typical mystery games focus on digging into contradictions in testimony or suspects’ alibis, this game distinguishes itself by developing the story around forensic analysis.

At this year’s Next Fest, the Act 2 demo of the mystery adventure ‘Stepper Retro: Superpower Mystery Quest’ by Gamepia and Team Tetrapod was also unveiled. It is garnering attention as a new title that continues the lineage of Korean mystery games, following titles such as ‘Because We Have to End the Unsolved Case’ and ‘Stepper Case’.

Korean Indie Games Growing Their Presence on the Global Stage

New titles from mid-sized and large game companies, such as Joycity’s ‘Freestyle Football 2′ and Com2uS Holdings’ ‘Zenonia 1: The Thread of Memory’, also participated in this Steam Next Fest. However, amidst this, numerous domestic indie games are making their presence known by directly connecting with global users.

Wishlist numbers, demo ratings, and community reaction have now become important indicators for gauging the success or failure of indie games. Beyond being a simple experiential event, Steam Next Fest has established itself as one of the most important gateways for Korean indie games to enter the global market.

The industry is focusing its attention on the results, as the choices made by global gamers over the next week could determine the next steps for these titles.
