- Rated ‘Very Positive’ on Steam… Makes its console debut featuring a unique worldview and time travel
- A story adventure combining Slavic tradition and time travel… Expanding its reach from PC to Xbox
The End of the Sun, a story adventure combining Slavic mythology and time travel, is expanding its reach to Xbox following PC.
Publisher IMGN.PRO and developer The End of the Sun Forge announced on the 14th that ‘The End of the Sun’ will be released on Xbox Series X|S on November 4. Along with this announcement, a new trailer featuring the atmosphere and key scenes of the Xbox version was also released.
‘The End of the Sun’ is a first-person story adventure based on Slavic mythology and folk culture. Set in a world where the daily lives of villagers, ancient beliefs, and supernatural events are intertwined, the protagonist, who can travel through time, traverses seasons and generations to uncover the stories hidden within the village.
‘Ashter’, who travels through time chasing the village’s secrets
The player takes on the role of Ashter, a Slavic priest capable of time travel, and arrives at a mysterious village. Following the stories of the residents, the player observes the lives of the same characters across different seasons and time periods, piecing together the truth behind the events that unfolded in the village.
The story unfolds around major festivals of Slavic culture. Time travel between the past and the present is not merely a narrative device but serves as a core element in solving the game.
Even if you visit the same place at a different time, you can discover events and clues that were not visible before. By connecting traces confirmed at different time points, the structure links the individual stories of residents, traditional rituals, and tales involving beings from Slavic mythology into a single narrative.
The game places more weight on exploration and story than on combat. The core of the game is the process of meticulously examining the surrounding environment and finding clues left here and there to uncover what happened in the past.
Slavic countryside landscapes revived through photogrammetry
The efforts to realistically recreate the landscape of the Slavic world also draw attention.
The development team personally researched the region’s traditions and lifestyle, and utilized photogrammetry technology to recreate actual buildings and historical artifacts within the game. By capturing even the smallest details, including rural buildings and household items, they brought to life the unique atmosphere of the era and the region.
Music is also an important element in creating the atmosphere of the work. A soundtrack inspired by traditional Slavic music has been reinterpreted in a modern way to complement the natural landscapes and the mood of the mysterious story. Voice acting is supported in English and Polish.
A Polish indie project created by two people over 8 years
‘The End of the Sun’ is also a work completed by two Polish developers over a period of about eight years.
Developer The End of the Sun Forge is a family-run independent art studio located in the heart of Europe. They aim to create works that bring hope and joy to players by combining visuals, music, atmosphere, and unique gameplay.
The development team’s philosophy is also reflected in the studio’s name. The name ‘The End of the Sun Forge’ was born from the belief that “every burning twilight creates a spark for a new dawn.”
The project that the two have worked on for a long time bore fruit last year. After crowdfunding and a long development process, they completed the PC version and are now preparing to meet new gamers with the first console version.
Positive reviews first seen on PC and Xbox expansion
‘The End of the Sun’ was first released on PC on January 29, 2025, via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.
The PC version received a positive response after its release, earning a ‘very positive’ user rating on Steam. In particular, the game’s strengths were cited as its world and natural landscapes that delicately recreated Slavic folk culture, as well as its story development utilizing time travel.
Adventure Game Hotspot, an overseas media outlet specializing in adventure, also gave a positive review of the story, which wove together natural scenery, characters, and folklore.
In particular, gamers gave positive reviews for the immersive experience created by the music and the process of slowly exploring the surroundings and discovering the story, rather than fast-paced gameplay or combat. On the other hand, some opinions indicate that the slow pace and movement style are divisive depending on personal preference.
From the rare subject matter of Slavic mythology to the research conducted to capture the actual culture and architecture, and the development carried out by the two over eight years.
‘The End of the Sun’ is closer to an indie game that deeply captures the culture and stories the creators know and love, rather than focusing on a massive scale. Attention is focused on whether the positive reviews received on PC can carry over to its first console release.
