After four decades of dystopian concept albums and unmistakable cover art, Voivod is finally getting its own game. Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior, the official licensed game built on the Canadian progressive metal band’s music, artwork, and sci-fi mythology, has released a new demo trailer.
The game is a story-driven run-and-gun Metroidvania set in a ravaged world where nuclear war has caused space, time, and reality itself to collapse. It recreates Voivod’s strange, singular sci-fi visuals in gritty pixel art and weaves the band’s music and long-built mythology densely into the game.
Developer Chaosmonger Studio is offering a free demo during Steam Next Fest, which starts October 19, and is targeting a full release in early 2027.
The Journey of Voivod, a Mutant Warrior Without Memory
The setting is a future in which reality itself began to unravel after nuclear war.
Players become Voivod, a warrior in constant mutation, exploring ruined wastelands, nightmarish spaces overgrown with biomechanical matter, and twisted dimensions. Inside a shattered mind, guided by a mysterious entity called Nothingface, the goal is to recover fragments of lost memory.
Grotesquely mutated enemies and unknown lifeforms stand in the way. Players gain new weapons and abilities to expand their combat options and face powerful bosses.
The game centers on fast-paced run-and-gun combat, combined with Metroidvania exploration and atmospheric storytelling. The developers say they worked closely with Voivod to weave the band’s music, mythology, and visual identity into the game world.
Two Ways to Play the Demo
The Steam Next Fest demo offers two modes to suit different play styles.
Story Path covers roughly the first hour of the full game in order, introducing characters, weapons, and abilities in a flow close to the final game, with an emphasis on story, exploration, and world.
Combat Trial focuses on action. It opens with a wider range of weapons and abilities and gets players quickly into intense fights and boss battles. One mode is about soaking in the world and story; the other gets straight to the core of combat.
The developers plan to use the two modes to show off both the game’s eerie atmosphere and story and its fast combat and grotesque enemy designs. They are continuing to tune combat, enemy behavior, and balance, and are incorporating playtest feedback into development.
The First Official Voivod Game, With the Band Involved
Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior is the first official video game based on the band. The project secured its production footing through a Kickstarter campaign that reached 265% of its goal.
According to earlier materials, band members have been involved in its creation. Michel “Away” Langevin contributed to visual design and artwork, and Daniel “Chewy” Mongrain helped rework the music for the game.
Vocalist Denis “Snake” Bélanger provided voice acting, and bassist Dominique “Rocky” Laroche reportedly took part in playtesting.
Rather than simply borrowing the band’s name and songs, it’s closer to a project that extends the music, artwork, and sci-fi universe Voivod has built over decades into a playable world.
Voivod’s Sci-Fi World in Pixel Art
Formed in Canada in 1982, Voivod has carved out its own territory across progressive metal, thrash, and experimental music.
Beyond unconventional song structures, the band has consistently explored nuclear war, future societies, technological civilization, and dystopian science fiction. The distinctive artwork created by Michel “Away” Langevin is considered as central to Voivod’s identity as the music.
The game leans heavily on that visual language. Rough, grotesque creatures, biomechanical forms, and warped spaces are rendered in hand-drawn-style pixel art, making it feel like Voivod’s album art has come to life.

Chaosmonger Studio: Film and Animation Experience
Chaosmonger Studio is an independent game studio based in Tallinn, Estonia. It was founded by Nicola Piovesan, an Italian filmmaker and game developer, and brings experience from film, animation, and interactive entertainment to its games.
Its previous titles include the sci-fi adventure ENCODYA and the Metroidvania action-adventure Clunky Hero.
Who This Is For
Strong fit for: longtime Voivod fans who want to step inside the band’s album art; run-and-gun and Metroidvania players looking for a grotesque, distinctive sci-fi world; pixel-art enthusiasts; anyone interested in music-licensed games built with real creative input from the artists.
Cautious fit for: players who need language support details, which the announcement doesn’t specify; console players, since those versions are still in development.
Less ideal for: those who prefer cozy or lighthearted games, given the body-horror, dystopian tone.
The Takeaway
Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior aims higher than the typical band tie-in. With the band’s members contributing art, music, voice, and playtesting, and a Tallinn studio rendering their four-decade mythology in gritty pixel art, it promises a playable version of Voivod’s nuclear nightmare. The Steam Next Fest demo’s two modes, Story Path for the world and Combat Trial for the action, give both longtime fans and newcomers an easy way in ahead of an early 2027 launch.
Free demo during Steam Next Fest (October 19 to 26). Full release: early 2027 (target).
