- Surpasses 150,000 Pre-Launch Wishlists… Officially Debuts Amid ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ Reviews for Demo
- A 2D adventure RPG where you run a witch’s bakery in Paris and heal people’s hearts
- Paris captured in warm hand-drawn illustrations, a fairytale-like sensibility enhanced by the music of Studio Ghibli’s Cécile Corbel.
The French indie game “The Witch’s Bakery,” which has received “overwhelmingly positive” reviews and has well over 150,000 entries on Steam wishlists, has been officially released.
Developer Sunny Lab and publisher Silver Lining Interactive announced on the 14th that they have released the cozy adventure RPG ‘The Witch’s Bakery’ on PC (Steam), PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2.
The game tells the story of the witch Lunne, who runs a small bakery in Paris and heals the emotional wounds of her customers. It is characterized by the combination of bakery management, city exploration, and character interactions with fantasy elements that allow players to directly look into emotions.
The warm, hand-drawn art style is complemented by opening music composed by Cécile Corbel, who worked on the music for the Studio Ghibli animation ‘Arrietty’.
Bakery by day, Paris by evening, Atelier by night
A day at ‘The Witch’s Bakery’ is broadly divided into three stages.
During the day, you run a bakery with your cat-like transformation partner, Orio. By serving customers and baking bread, you accumulate experience points, money, and reputation to gradually grow the shop.
When evening comes, you can leave the bakery and wander around various parts of Paris. Meeting diverse people on the streets, sharing stories, and participating in various activities, the relationship evolves beyond that of a simple customer and clerk into a friendship.
After finishing the day, you return to the atelier at night. You can improve your baking skills by studying new recipes or prepare for the next day by reading books.
Rather than a management game focused simply on expanding the bakery, the standout feature is its structure that places weight on the process of meeting people, building relationships, and discovering the stories each individual holds, centered around the bakery.
Heart wounds that bread cannot heal, ‘Heart Palace’
A single delicious loaf of bread cannot solve all the worries of the visitors.
When you meet someone who has closed their heart due to deep worry and wounds, you need Rune’s special magic. Rune can enter the ‘Heart Palaces,’ a hidden world where human emotions appear in actual form.
The Heart Palace is a magical space that represents the inner self of each character. Players must explore this maze-like space to find scattered emotions and guide them back to their hearts. Through this process, they come to understand the worries and wounds the other person has harbored and gradually begin to heal them.
The game involves building relationships through bread and conversation in real-life Paris, while directly confronting emotions within the inner world. This is the core system unique to ‘The Witch’s Bakery,’ connecting bakery management with an emotion-driven story.
Hand-Painted Paris Meets Cécile Corbel’s Music
The visuals and music, which bring out the warm atmosphere, also catch the eye.
The streets, bakeries, and characters of Paris are depicted in a hand-drawn 2D art style. Rather than faithfully reproducing the real city, the design emphasizes an atmosphere reminiscent of traveling through a fairytale Paris.
In particular, French musician Cécile Corbel, who composed the music for Studio Ghibli’s ‘Arrietty’, participated in the opening music.
The development team previously described their collaboration with Korvel as “a dream come true.” Korvel’s signature music and hand-drawn style blend together to deliver an atmosphere reminiscent of classic animation right from the start of the game.
Surpasses 150,000 Wishlist… The Debut of a French Indie Team That Started on Kickstarter
‘The Witch’s Bakery’ is the first work by Sunny Lab, an indie team composed of French developers.
Sunny Lab is a small indie development studio that aims to create games with hopeful stories, lovable characters, and a lasting emotional resonance. ‘The Witch’s Bakery’ is a work that fully reflects this direction.
It started with crowdfunding. After successfully completing a Kickstarter campaign, full-scale development continued, and it garnered attention by surpassing 150,000 items on Steam wishlists prior to release. The previously released demo also received an “overwhelmingly positive” rating on Steam.
The development team initially aimed for a release on August 20, but postponed the schedule once to fix bugs and improve the quality for more stable gameplay. After about two months of additional work, the official version was unveiled on the 14th.
The package edition featuring a cookbook is now available on mobile.
Following the digital release, package editions for PS5 and Nintendo platforms also went on sale starting October 16.
The package prices are £29.99, $34.99, and €34.99. All packages include a digital cookbook containing real French pastry recipes so that you can enjoy the bakery atmosphere from the game in real life.
The platform is also expanding. The mobile version is scheduled to be released via Crunchyroll Game Vault. A specific release date has not yet been announced.
The first work by a French indie team that started on Kickstarter and surpassed 150,000 wishlists. ‘The Witch’s Bakery’ has created its own unique style by adding fantasy elements of exploring Paris, human relationships, and personally seeking out inner wounds to the familiar theme of running a bakery.
Many gamers are focusing their attention on whether The Witch’s Little Bakery, completed with warm hand-drawn illustrations and music by Cécile Corbel, can continue the pre-release interest and positive reviews of the demo in the official version.
