Unity (NYSE: U), the world’s leading platform for creating and growing real-time 3D content, has released its highly anticipated “2025 Mobile Game Trend Insights.” The report features expert analysis on the shifting landscape of the mobile market, highlighting new monetization strategies and the growing influence of developers in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.
Unity’s experts identified six core trends set to define the industry this year:
- Expansion of Rewarded Marketplaces
- Surge in Rewarded Ad Utilization
- Critical Importance of Long-Format Playable Ads
- Accelerated Adoption of Ad-Supported Subscription Models
- The Resurgence of Mid-Market Games
- Global Expansion of APAC Developers

1. The Evolution of Rewarded Experiences
Eyal Hendleman, Senior Director and Head of Business and Strategy for Unity Offerwall, noted that rewarded experiences are no longer confined to mobile games. As advertisers see higher returns on rewarded formats, these “marketplaces” are expanding into non-gaming apps and web platforms.
Samantha Benjamin, Director of Growth & LiveOps at Supersonic, added that Hybrid-Casual games are now the primary driver of the mobile ad market. Advertisers are increasingly turning to Rewarded Video (RV) to secure high-quality audiences through immersive storytelling across subgenres like puzzles, simulation, and action.
2. The Power of “Long-Format” Playables
The report highlights a shift from short, click-driven ads to deep-engagement formats. Svitlana Matlay, Design Team Lead and Creative Consultant, explained that while standard ads push users to the store after a few clicks, Long-Format Playable Ads allow users to complete challenges or clear levels within the ad itself.
- Duration: 60 to 120 seconds.
- Interaction: 20+ touchpoints to ensure the user experiences core game mechanics.
- AI Integration: AI is being used to generate diverse creatives that maintain constant user immersion.
3. Subscription Apps Move Toward “Freemium”
Market saturation and increased price sensitivity among consumers are slowing the growth of traditional subscription models. Sandra Amir, Senior Director of Growth Partnerships, analyzed that users now prefer discounted subscription rates in exchange for watching ads. This is leading more apps to adopt Freemium models, offering basic services for free while monetizing through ads and premium feature upsells.
4. Mid-Market Games and APAC Dominance
The report also points to a “vibrant return” of the Mid-Market sector—games that sit between massive AAA blockbusters and small indie titles. Stuart Knox, Senior Director of Partner Success, observed that developers are focusing on sophisticated content and deep world-building to satisfy evolving player tastes.
Finally, Eric Qi, GM of APAC Grow at Unity, shared a positive outlook on the global influence of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese developers. These creators are setting new global standards by combining cutting-edge game mechanics with AI-driven gameplay and immersive storytelling.
