A boss every three minutes, a final dragon at thirty, and a horde that never stops coming. Maldhalla, the first game made solo by Noonjaengi (Park Hee-jun), a Korean tech YouTuber with roughly 800,000 subscribers, is now out on Steam.
Maldhalla is a pixel-art survival roguelite about staying alive as long as possible against endless waves. Built on the Survivors-like formula, it features enemies that grow stronger over time, a boss every three minutes, and a wide range of character and weapon combinations.
Noonjaengi has collected player feedback through a free Steam demo since June, and the full version adds new content including a second map and a seasonal ranking system.
A Boss Every Three Minutes, a New Build Every Run
Survival is the core. The longer you last, the tougher the enemies become, and a new boss arrives every three minutes. From the ground-pounding Giant to the Bone Dragon that appears at the thirty-minute mark as the final boss, each has its own attack patterns.
Weapons fire automatically. Players focus on positioning to avoid enemy and boss attacks and on choosing new abilities and upgrades at each level-up to shape their build.
Options are plentiful. There are 21 characters, each with different starting weapons, passives, and active skills. Signature abilities, such as the Ranger’s dash, the Paladin’s invincibility, and the Bard’s buff to every weapon, change how each character fights.
On top of that come 32 weapons, 21 gems, and 60 blessings. Using certain two- or three-weapon combinations triggers a relic with a special effect, making each run’s synergies different.
Characters, weapons, and relics unlock gradually through play and achievements. There are no paid items that make characters stronger.
Map Two: The Old Prison
The full release adds a new battlefield. The second map, the Old Prison, unlocks after defeating the final boss that appears at thirty minutes on the first map, the Dungeon.
It brings new mechanics as well as a new look. Getting caught in a searchlight triggers an alarm; keys open iron maidens; elite monsters lurk in locked cells. The prison setting shapes every gimmick.
Four new bosses await: the Digger, the Roll Caller, and the Rat King, followed by the final boss, the Head Warden.
Biweekly Seasons and a November Co-op Beta
Updates continue after launch. The new seasonal ranking runs in two-week cycles, with seasons rolling over every other Monday at 9 a.m. The first season runs from launch until October 26 at 9 a.m.
When a season ends, players receive tier titles based on their records, with rank titles for top players. Competitive ranking spans nine tiers, from Rookie to Immortal. Players who recorded scores on the Steam leaderboards before full release, including during the demo, receive a commemorative “Founding Member” title.
Multiplayer is on the way too: an online co-op beta is planned for November.
A Tech YouTuber’s First Game
Noonjaengi has been active as a game streamer and YouTuber since 2012. He reached high ranks in games including League of Legends, Overwatch, and PUBG, and now runs a YouTube channel of about 800,000 subscribers focused on PC hardware and tech.
Maldhalla is his first solo-developed game. On Steam, both the developer and publisher are listed under his handle, eyejoker.
He drew his direction from the games he loves. He says he enjoys games like Risk of Rain 2 and the Monster Hunter series that naturally make you think “just one more run” after finishing, and hopes Maldhalla can be that kind of game.
Built With Players: 50+ Updates Before Launch
As a first game, Maldhalla put heavy emphasis on player feedback.
About 2,600 people took part in a playtest in February. A free demo followed in June, gathering feedback right up to launch.
Based on playtest and demo feedback, Noonjaengi revised much of the game, including characters, skills, bosses, and balance. In the final three weeks before launch alone, he shipped more than 50 updates to polish it.
Souls earned and content unlocked in the demo carry over to the full version. The game supports 19 languages, including Korean.
Who This Is For
Strong fit for: Survivors-like fans who want frequent boss fights and deep build variety; competitive players who enjoy seasonal leaderboards and tier titles; players who value fair progression with no paid power; budget-conscious buyers, given the low price; followers of Noonjaengi’s channel curious to see his game design.
Cautious fit for: players waiting for multiplayer, since online co-op is still in beta planning for November; anyone tired of the Survivors-like formula, as this builds on rather than reinvents it.
Less ideal for: those seeking story-driven experiences or manual-aim action.
The Takeaway
Maldhalla is a Survivors-like built the way a longtime competitive player would build one: frequent bosses, dense synergies, biweekly seasons, and no shortcuts for sale. What stands out most is the process: 2,600 playtesters, a months-long demo, and more than 50 updates in three weeks. Noonjaengi’s audience gives the game a head start, but its ambition is to be judged as an indie game first. With a second map at launch and co-op on the horizon, it’s off to a solid start.
