Unknown Hex, a one-person development studio, will release “Until North Ends,” a cooperative survival crafting game that he has spent eight years developing alone, on Steam Early Access on August 31.
Until North Ends is an open-world survival crafting adventure set in a harsh Nordic-themed world. Players will gather resources, craft items, and conquer each perilous biome through solo or cooperative play within a world featuring a top-down perspective and evocative low-poly graphics.
Procedurally generated islands and a combat-filled adventure with high freedom
Players can personally board a boat to cross waterways in search of new islands or explore caves and dungeons to secure loot. At times, it is also possible to stroll through peaceful meadows and look around the surrounding environment.
The game world is procedurally generated, and unique environments and hazards are randomly placed on each island. As a result, the developer explains that even when exploring the same location, players can experience different situations and adventures each time.
The combat system can also be freely configured to suit the player’s preferences. You can engage in combat in your own style by combining heavy armor and melee weapons, ranged attacks using a bow, or even powerful ‘Chain Lightning’ spells.
From Architecture to Alchemy, Systematic Crafting for Survival
Building a base for survival and a sophisticated crafting system are also core elements of the game. While constructing a shelter to escape the harsh environment to farm and decorate, a higher level of resource management is required, such as ore smelting, leather tanning, and extracting ingredients using an alchemy workbench.
Character customization is also supported. You can directly set various appearance elements, including hair color and tattoos, allowing you to deploy your own unique character and companion adventurers on survival adventures.
“Creating games filled with emotion”… A solo developer’s 8-year obsession
The developer, Unknown Hex, has been working on this game alone for the past eight years. Beyond a simple commercial product, the focus is on conveying the atmosphere and emotions of the game, and the primary goal is to create a game that continuously evolves through communication with the user community.
‘Until North Ends’ is the debut title from Unknown Hex, and development is currently underway with the goal of creating an open-world survival crafting adventure.
Approximately two years of early access… maintaining the same price even after the official launch
‘Until North Ends’ is scheduled to remain in Early Access for approximately two years following its launch on August 31. The developers plan to sequentially update new biomes, items, and customization elements by actively incorporating user feedback collected through community channels such as Discord. Notably, the developers have explicitly stated that the Early Access price will remain unchanged even after the official launch.
As of now, based on the Steam page, only English (interface, subtitles, voice) has been confirmed as a supported language. Attention is focused on what kind of impression this Nordic survival story, built over eight years by a solo developer, will leave on fans of the survival genre.
