- Familiar memories for Koreans, an unfamiliar cultural experience for overseas users… ‘Kimbap Cheonguk’ becomes an indie game
- From washing rice to rolling gimbap… A Korean-style restaurant simulation featuring actual cooking and cooperative gameplay
Kimbap Cheonguk, a representative Korean snack bar, has appeared as an indie game. ‘Kimbap Cheonguk Simulator,’ which captures everything from ingredient preparation to cooking, serving, and store management, is drawing attention for its combination of familiar Korean food culture and the simulation genre.
Kimbap Heaven Simulator, currently under development by the Seoul-based Korean indie studio Joyful Jo Inc., has garnered an enthusiastic response through its participation in Steam Next Fest and the release of a public demo, and is now accelerating its final stages of development toward an official release on PC and macOS in the second quarter of 2026.
The demo released on February 24 has been continuously improved through 27 updates so far, and the development team announced, along with the release of the final major patch for the demo, that they are “now sprinting toward the official release.”
An indie game idea that started from that neighborhood shop, a familiar snack bar.
Kimbap Cheonguk Simulator is a game that originated from the development team’s contemplation on a Korean-style cooking game.
Jo Sang-hee, CEO of Joyful Jo, explained the background of the development, stating, “I have enjoyed cooking games and restaurant simulations, but it was difficult to find a game centered on Korean food. That is when ‘Kimbap Cheonguk’ naturally came to mind. I thought it was a place that every Korean knows and could symbolically capture the wide range of Korean cuisine.”
Players become the owner of the neighborhood snack bar ‘Gimbap Cheonguk’ and experience the entire process of operation, from sourcing ingredients and cooking to taking orders, serving, and growing the store. The game features a growth structure that goes beyond simply making gimbap; players can expand the menu starting with basic gimbap to include tuna, cheese, and beef varieties, and increase the store’s scale and efficiency by introducing new cooking equipment and facilities.
The core fun element of the work is the process of growing an ordinary neighborhood snack shop from a small store into a ‘true Kimbap Cheonguk’.
From washing the rice to rolling the gimbap… Capturing the authentic touch of home cooking
The core of the game is a gameplay structure that actively incorporates the ‘actual cooking process.’ Rather than simply completing a dish with a single button press, players must perform the process step-by-step: washing the rice, cooking it, blanching the spinach, stir-frying the carrots, frying the eggs, placing the ingredients on the seaweed, and then rolling and slicing the gimbap by hand. Burning ingredients or delaying order responses will affect customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
The development team explains that the game also includes practical gimbap recipes and cooking tips, offering the “fun of learning” beyond simple cooking presentations. The cooperative play structure incorporates teamwork elements where roles are divided to increase kitchen efficiency, allowing players to experience the enjoyment of cooperative gameplay reminiscent of the Overcooked series.
A menu packed under fluorescent lights, visuals full of Korean street vibes
Jo Sang-hee, CEO of Joyful Jo, cited “a Korean sense of everyday life” as the core direction of the work. “I wanted to recreate Korean streets and restaurants as closely as possible to actual Korean streets and restaurants to convey a sense of familiarity to Korean users and the feeling of having visited Korea in person to overseas users,” CEO Jo explained. “I actively reflected this direction throughout the art design as well.”
The game features a visual composition that combines realistic 3D visuals with local Korean sensibilities. The interior of a restaurant under fluorescent lighting, a densely packed menu, a cramped yet bustling first-person kitchen, and street scenes reminiscent of Korean alley commercial districts blend together to create a sense of everyday life familiar to everyone.
Spreading through streamer and YouTuber gameplay, garnering enthusiastic reactions from domestic and international communities
Developer Joyful Joe is an indie studio focused on reinterpreting Korean culture and lifestyle themes into gameplay experiences. ‘Kimbap Cheonguk Simulator’ is a title that incorporates Korean snack food culture, which is unfamiliar in the global market, into a game system, aiming to combine the experiential nature of local culture with the immersive quality of the simulation genre.
Following the release of the demo, the game quickly became a hot topic as numerous content creators produced gameplay videos on domestic streaming platforms such as SOOP and Chijijik, as well as YouTube channels.
Domestic users have responded with comments such as, “It evokes the vibe of Kimbap Cheonguk, a place I used to stop by after working late,” and “It’s overwhelming to play alone, but it would be much more fun if roles were divided in multiplayer.” Meanwhile, interest in the unique themes of K-food and operating a local Korean restaurant is also continuing among overseas users.
A snack bar to soothe late-night hunger, a bustling kitchen during busy lunch hours, and the scenes of daily life passing by beneath a packed menu. Instead of a glamorous fantasy world or a grand narrative, the neighborhood snack bar that everyone has likely encountered at least once has become the stage of the game.
Attention is focused on how Kimbap Cheonguk Simulator will capture the landscape of Korean daily life through its gameplay, and what kind of resonance that familiarity will create with overseas users across borders.
