Solo Developed, Overwhelmingly Positive Co-op Horror ‘Shift at Midnight’ Officially Released

    By Editorial Team2026년 07월 24일4 Mins Read
    • Australian solo developer Bun Muen makes headlines with ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ reviews on Steam starting from the demo
    • Simultaneous launch on PC and Xbox Series X|S … Official Steam version also ‘Very Positive’ at 90%
    • Late-night shift at a gas station convenience store to identify doppelgängers, an online cooperative game for up to 3 players

Shift at Midnight, an online cooperative detective horror game presented by Kwalee, a publisher based in Leamington Spa, UK, was officially released on PC and Xbox Series X|S on July 22.

Developed by Australian solo developer Bun Muen, this is a new cooperative detective horror title that allows up to three players to participate simultaneously. Players must closely examine customers visiting the store during randomly assigned shift times to identify an unknown entity disguised as a human.

If you fail to identify and let a guest with a hidden identity escape, that entity mutates into a grotesque monster as night deepens and attacks the player again. When the monster threat begins, the game transitions into a desperate survival phase where you must blockade the store doors, set traps, and hide.

A structure combining convenience store management and mystery … Set in a 1990s American gas station

The game is set in a remote gas station convenience store in rural America during the 1990s. Players must simultaneously perform the role of a detective, stocking shelves, organizing merchandise, and maintaining the store while asking customers questions, verifying their IDs, and cross-referencing the information with a computer. Up to five questions can be asked per customer, and even a single minor clue can determine survival.

This structure, where management and deduction proceed simultaneously, creates a unique tension characteristic of games. Overseas media outlets have noted that the split-second pressure of having to identify a suspicious individual between a rush of customers and remaining tasks acts as a greater source of fear than the moment the monster appears.

Story Mode consists of a total of 13 nights, and after completion, you can experience Endless Mode (Beta).

The immersion created by retro-style visuals and close-range voice chat

Shift at Midnight creates a unique atmosphere through retro visuals reminiscent of 1990s American rural convenience stores. Added to this is a proximity-based voice chat system that maximizes tension by changing the voice heard depending on a teammate’s location and situation.

Reviews from overseas media are generally positive. The analysis notes that the combination of lighthearted tension and comedic elements stands out more than a traditional horror game. However, they added that the intense, unexpected jump scares serve as a balance, ensuring the game does not lose its authentic horror essence.

Developer Bun Muen also acknowledged that the current game is somewhat skewed toward entertainment value. He expressed his ambition to gradually add depth as a horror thriller through continuous free updates following launch.

Word of mouth from the demo… The buzz created by a solo developer’s game

Shift at Midnight is a title that has garnered high interest even before its official release.

The free multiplayer demo, which allowed players to experience three days of night shifts, firmly established its unique gameplay and recorded an “overwhelmingly positive” rating on Steam, with 99% of the 4,762 reviews being positive. In particular, it is evaluated that the game succeeded in capturing the attention of global users by gaining word-of-mouth on major social media platforms such as TikTok, sparked by broadcasts from popular streamers.

The positive trend continues even after the official release. Currently on Steam, 90% of the 1,048 reviews are positive, maintaining a ‘very positive’ rating.

The developer plans to continuously incorporate user feedback through the Steam forums and Discord channels, and is also running bundle promotions with popular cooperative horror games such as ‘Escape the Backrooms’ and ‘Phasmophobia’.

Armed with the fresh planning characteristic of indie games, the one-person development ‘Shift at Midnight’ succeeded in capturing both virality and positive user reviews even during its demo phase. Amidst unpredictable night shifts where tension cannot be let down for a single moment, expectations are high for the game’s future trajectory as it presents a new paradigm for indie horror games and aims for long-term success.
