In a world where the stars are losing their light, a girl wielding a sword and her childhood friend who controls magic set out on a journey, each harboring their own wish.
‘STARDUST: Wish of Witch’, a new title from the Korean indie developer Knive Studio, was officially released on the PC platform on May 29. Released via Steam and Stove, the game is a turn-based strategy RPG that combines the classic tactical fun of classic SRPGs with card-based strategic elements and modern system design.

‘Stardust: The Star and the Witch’ centers on a fantasy narrative revolving around the secrets of the stars and twisted destinies. Players take on the roles of the spirited swordsman ‘Star’ and her longtime friend and wizard ‘Yuu,’ embarking on a journey toward the truth of the world with differing hearts and beliefs. While following the familiar texture of a coming-of-age narrative, the game stands out for its emphasis on delicately unraveling the relationships between characters and the flow of their emotions.
The combat system adds card strategy elements to the framework of a traditional SRPG. The basic structure of calculating movement, placement, and action order on a grid-based battlefield is supplemented by the management of each character’s skill cards, requiring tactical choices that go beyond simple numerical battles. It is a system where hand composition, skill combinations, and battlefield positioning intertwine, allowing decisions made in every turn to change the flow of the battle.
Another impression of the work is revealed in its visuals. Delicate pixel art and frame-by-frame character animation breathe life into not only combat scenes but also dialogue and cutscenes. Small yet meticulous facial expressions and movements quietly convey the characters’ emotions, allowing the player to naturally feel the contrast between the world and the characters.
Immediately after its release, Steam users have been praising its strategic depth, presentation, and classic JRPG sensibility. In a market flooded with fast-paced games and immediate stimuli, ‘Stardust: The Witch’ stands out as a title that directly brings out the true essence of a strategic RPG, where players take their turns slowly and build upon their choices carefully.
Combining the sensibilities of classic SRPGs with card-based tactics and pixel art-centered visual aesthetics, ‘Stardust: Star and Witch’ is a work that stands out for its attempt to reinterpret the grammar of classic strategy RPGs in a modern way.
Given that it puts careful turn management, skill combinations, and character-driven fantasy narratives at the forefront, the key point to watch is how convincingly it can appeal to the tastes of the genre’s fanbase.
Attention is focused on whether the first project unveiled by Knive Studio will leave a new memory for strategy RPG fans, and furthermore, whether it can serve as an opportunity to expand the base of the turn-based strategy genre in the domestic indie game market.
‘Stardust: The Witch’ is available for purchase on Steam and Stove.
