Gachon University (President Gil-Yeo Lee) Department of Game and Visual Arts announced that it has successfully completed the ‘Summer Seasonal Game Project Results Presentation’ for first-year students.
The Department of Game and Video, an early employment contract department, organizes a team for first-year students every season and carries out intensive projects to develop games directly. For this project, 80 first-year students who entered the 22nd year formed 10 teams for this project, planned a new game in a short period of 4 weeks, and directly performed all production processes related to development, including graphics and programming.
In order to return the weekend and observe the results of the students who worked hard on the game development project, in addition to their advisors, Sesisoft, Nessipsimsanmin, Nextstep Studio, Delicious Games, Lookson, QGames, Crowned Turtle, Playworks, Major players in the game industry such as Hongik Science and Technology participated. They listened to the students’ presentations and encouraged the students by providing affectionate questions and opinions about the project, showing a high interest in the students’ improved skills.
The Department of Early Employment Contract at Gachon University is an early employment program by the Ministry of Education, which starts by matching students and companies so that they can get a job at the same time as they enter. It is a business that can quickly secure customized practical talents.
Gachon University’s Department of Game and Visual Arts is a 3-year and 8-semester system, and during the first year, students intensively complete major basic skills and on-the-job training, and from the second year, they are hired by the company they agreed to at the time of admission. Students who have learned the basics for one year participate in the industrial field during the second and third grades to enhance their job competency, and the school intensifies the job. Accordingly, students have the great advantage of having two years of practical experience at the same time as obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
The Department of Game and Video prepares courses for each track from the first year of game programming, video and graphics, and production, and teaches technologies that reflect the latest trends in the game industry, such as the use of Unity and Unreal engines, 3D modeling, and AR/VR, and collaborates with partner companies. It has been conducting field-oriented classes as a curriculum centered on project practice using collaboration.
Lee Hyun-jin, CEO of Delicious Games, who directly observed this presentation, said, “I was amazed at the skills and possibilities of the students who rapidly improved the quality of their projects at every stage for four weeks.” In addition, they indicated that they are interested in expanding recruitment.
Professor Jeong-yoon Kim (head of the Department) of Gachon University’s Department of Game and Visual Arts said, “Even though they are freshmen who have just finished one semester, I think they have had a good opportunity to find their own job direction through experience in the game development process like a real game. It seems that the merits of the contract department for early employment, in which officials directly participate, select students, and create a curriculum together, are further strengthened through the game project,” he said.
