- Developed by Blue Ramen Studio, a developer on the French island of Réunion.
- An exploration adventure inspired by the real Maafat Basin and Creole culture
A unique indie game set against the backdrop of the beautiful natural beauty of the Indian Ocean is coming to gamers.
Blue Ramen Studio, an indie developer from the French island of Réunion, has confirmed the participation of ‘Steam Next Fest,’ which opens on October 19, for its upcoming adventure game ‘MAFATE.’ The developer has updated the latest demo version ahead of the main event, and it is currently available to play on Steam.
‘Mafate’ is set in the actual volcanic basin terrain of the island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. Players take on the role of a mail carrier traversing exotic and vast valleys, delivering warm letters to neighbors and capturing beautiful scenery in photographs while enjoying the exploration.
The game has thoroughly excluded stimulating elements. There are no fierce battles or waypoints that forcefully direct you to a destination anywhere in the game. There is also no system that forces you to rush by time. The biggest feature of this game is ‘harmless healing,’ where you can slowly savor the beautiful natural scenery and the stories of the residents blended into it while contemplating.
A mail carrier walking through a remote volcanic basin
The Mapate Basin is a real volcanic caldera on Réunion Island. Accessible only on foot or by helicopter due to the absence of roads and vehicles, the game portrays this area as a space where remote villages, forests, waterfalls, cliffs, and trails harmonize.
The developers introduced the game by stating that they added a magical atmosphere based on real-life landscapes. Players will explore the valley and encounter Creole culture.
The protagonist is the mailman of Mafatt, who would later be known as a legend. He delivers letters between remote villages, meets residents, and learns their stories. Letter delivery lies at the center of a journey that connects isolated communities.
Luna, the Girl Who Became a Magic Camera
Another protagonist of the journey is Luna, a Creole girl who has turned into a magical camera.
According to the previously released store description, Luna, who has spent her entire life in mainland France, returns to her hometown of Réunion to comfort her grandmother after she loses her grandfather. Later, due to an unknown incident, she travels to the 1970s, becomes a camera, and joins the first journey of the mail carrier who will later become a legend.
Players use Luna’s camera to view the valley from a new perspective and take photos. The more you observe your surroundings and find creative compositions, the better the photos you can obtain. When not using the camera, you can possess native animals. Using each animal’s unique abilities, you will find hidden paths, discover secrets, or solve environmental puzzles.
The developers explained that they aim for a gameplay style where players take their time, look around, and follow their curiosity to discover the valley.
Developer Blue Ramen, a project that started in Réunion
Blue Ramen Studio is an indie developer based in Sainte-Marie on the island of Réunion. According to the local media outlet Outremers 360, development of ‘Mafate’ began in April 2024. In 2025, the company participated in the European Game Night, an event for the European gaming industry, as a representative of France to showcase the game.
Blue Ramen is also the place that founded ‘Bouftang,’ a collective established to solidify the foundation of Réunion’s game industry. Introducing itself as a studio that aims for calm, thoughtful, and humanistic games, the studio revealed its direction to combine immediate enjoyment with deep storytelling.
The adventure of ‘Mapat,’ who roams the great outdoors with the help of animals while carrying a camera and a letter bag, offers a small respite from the exhaustion of daily life. Having unveiled the update demo a step ahead of time at Steam Next Fest, it is now fully prepared to captivate the eyes and hearts of gamers who have been waiting for a healing adventure embodying the beauty of slowness.
