- The Wealthy Who Left for Mars, the Counterfeit Expert Left Behind in Locked-down New York on the 31st
- From an orphan boy to a suspicious stranger… A narrative branching into 9 different endings depending on your choices
One hundred years after the wealthy left for Mars, a man in a locked-down underground bar in New York starts working as a counterfeit money detector to pay off his debts. Every single bill passing by his desk determines not only someone’s fate but his own life as well.
The two-person development team Fenyx Digital has released a demo version of their new pixel art narrative game , ‘The Money Man,’ on Steam. Comprised of developers Sava Beric and Ahmed Inhaam, Fenyx Digital has consistently showcased works centered on immersive worlds and multi-layered narratives.
Dystopian New York, The Man Who Became a Counterfeit Currency Expert
The setting of ‘The Money Man’ is a future New York, 100 years after the world’s wealthy left Earth and migrated to Mars. With the city under lockdown, the player becomes a debtor working in a back room of a bar to pay off their debts.
The player’s mission is to inspect the money brought in by other debtors over the next 31 days to prevent counterfeit bills from entering the vault. You must meticulously check the serial numbers and portraits on the bills using a scanner, UV light panel, light, and a reference ledger for comparison.
However, the situation changes drastically starting on the 11th day of work. This is because the gate connecting to Mars reopens, and a new, unidentified currency begins pouring into the city. Poor judgment can threaten not only the player’s own life but also the lives of their loved ones, going beyond mere financial loss.
The Fate Changed by a Single Counterfeit Bill… Nine Endings
The core of the game is not simply counterfeit detection. It is characterized by the fact that the flow of the story changes moment by moment depending on the player’s choices, as the inspection of banknotes at the desk and conversations at the bar after work are intricately interwoven.
You must decide whether to turn a blind eye to someone’s counterfeit money or report it according to the rules, and this decision directly affects the flow of the story.
Depending on the player’s choices, the game’s story leads to a total of nine different endings. A wide variety of options are available, ranging from endings where you remain loyal to the organization to becoming an informant, and even escaping to Mars. Sometimes, a single decision can completely change your future destiny.
‘Chapter 1’ demo allowing you to experience the moral dilemmas of the five days preceding the main story.
In the demo released this time, you can experience the worldview and core systems of ‘The Money Man’ in advance through a prequel story preceding the main game.
The player learns how to use various tools necessary for detecting counterfeit money while becoming entangled with desperate debtors in New York. Over the course of a few days, the player meets an orphan boy, a waitress, and a mysterious stranger, who ask the player to turn a blind eye to counterfeit money due to their own desperate circumstances.
The problem begins the moment you grant their request. The losses from the counterfeit money in the safe are deducted entirely from the player’s weekly wage, which also affects the schedule for repaying the debt owed to the organization.
Ultimately, it is impossible to help all three people while simultaneously protecting one’s own life. Depending on the choices the player makes during the five days spent at the desk, the story will unfold in different directions.
Fenyx Digital, pursuing an immersive worldview and multi-layered narrative
Fenyx Digital is an indie development studio founded by two longtime friends with over five years of game development experience.
The development team aims to create a work that leaves a deep impression even after playing, through an immersive worldview and a dense, multi-layered narrative.
Based on this development direction, ‘The Money Man’ combines pixel art visuals, unique gameplay involving counterfeit detection, and a narrative that changes depending on your choices.
In particular, it is expected to provide a differentiated experience by allowing players to decide for themselves who to trust and who to ignore, going beyond simply finding fake money.
‘The Money Man’ tells the story of a wealthy elite who have migrated to Mars, a closed-off New York, and a man who identifies counterfeit money to pay off his debts. With the demo revealing the five days immediately preceding the main story, attention is focused on how the multi-ending, which branches into nine different paths depending on the player’s choices, will conclude.
