- The debut title from the two-person German studio Cyberwave, a renewable energy-based sky island survival crafting game
- Xbox Game Pass Day One registrations and 500,000 Steam demo downloads… Steam reviews show mixed reactions at 75%
Farm on a floating island, generate electricity using wind and solar power, and build your own aerial paradise with friends. ‘Solarpunk,’ a healing survival game focused on a life in coexistence with nature without combat or competition, has been officially released.
German two-person indie studio Cyberwave and publisher rokaplay simultaneously released ‘Solarpunk’ on June 8 for PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game was released directly as version 1.0 without going through Early Access and is also available as an Xbox Game Pass Day One title.

1.2 Million Wishlists, the Gate to the Sky Island Opens After a 4-Year Wait
Solarpunk has been considered one of the most anticipated indie titles of recent years, accumulating 1.2 million items on the Steam wishlist.
It was originally targeted for release in 2024, but the launch was postponed several times due to reasons such as multiplayer stabilization, inventory improvements, and airship handling enhancements.
Just before launch, the development team also managed expectations by introducing the game to the community as “not a title intended to compete with large-scale survival games, but a calm and cozy survival sandbox created with care by a small team.”

Combat-free survival, renewable energy is the core system
The biggest feature of Solarpunk is that it boldly excludes combat and hostile threat elements commonly found in the survival genre.
Instead, energy management utilizing solar panels, wind turbines, and hydroelectric generators becomes the core of the game. Players must build their own automation system while balancing power production and consumption.
Weather is also a significant variable. If solar power efficiency drops due to cloudy weather, or if strong winds and heavy rain occur, the entire energy production plan can be disrupted. Understanding the natural environment and operating facilities accordingly becomes a key task for survival.
The game also offers a wealth of lifestyle content. You can secure food by cultivating crops, interact with animals, and obtain various resources. Harvesting and production processes can be automated using drones, and the time saved can be utilized for construction and exploration.

Watercolor-like cell-shaded visuals and idyllic soundscapes
The game is set in a sky world composed of numerous floating islands. Players can build their own airships to explore new islands and collect rare resources. Each island offers a different environment and resources, and players will discover new building materials and crafting recipes during the exploration process.
The game supports online cooperative play for up to 4 players, allowing you to build a huge airborne village with friends, or you can play leisurely by yourself.
The world, rendered in Unreal Engine 5, faithfully captures the distinctive ‘Solarpunk’ aesthetic where nature and technology harmonize. Floating islands filled with lush vegetation, clear skies, and a dynamically changing weather system combine to create a landscape reminiscent of a watercolor painting.
The soundtrack, consisting of birdsong, wind sounds, and gentle electronic music, also blends naturally with the combat-free gameplay, completing a relaxing atmosphere.

300 Million Won on Kickstarter & 500,000 Demo Downloads, Steam Reviews Mixed
Solarpunk raised approximately 300,000 euros from 6,312 backers in its 2023 Kickstarter campaign, achieving about 10 times its target amount. It also built a fanbase by recording 500,000 demo downloads during Steam Next Fest.
However, reviews since the official release have been somewhat mixed. Currently, Steam user ratings remain at the “Mostly Positive” level. Positive users expressed satisfaction, describing it as a “violence-free, healing crafting game that delivers the exact experience advertised.”
On the other hand, there are quite a few opinions expressing disappointment regarding the depth of the automation system. While the system itself is easy to understand and highly convenient, the assessment is that it may feel somewhat lightweight if one expected production management and optimization on the level of ‘Factorio’ or ‘Satisfactory’.
In addition, the fact that the motivation for exploration and the frequency of new discoveries decrease as playtime increases is also pointed out as an element that needs improvement.
