A letter arrives with news that your grandfather has died. You quit your job, go back to the seaside town where you grew up, and inherit his old café. Upstairs, in a hidden lab, something he built is waiting to wake up. Lami: A Cup of Code and Coffee, from Taiwanese solo developer Lemi’s Lemist Game Studio, has released a free Steam demo ahead of a planned 2027 launch.
The game stands out for how it blends genres: café management at its base, with rhythm action and exploration beyond the town woven in.
A Grandfather’s Café and an AI Robot Named Lami
The protagonist is a young adult worn down by an endlessly repeating routine. After receiving news of their grandfather’s death along with a letter, they leave their company job and return to the seaside town.
There, they take over the old café full of memories and, in a hidden lab on the second floor, awaken Lami, an AI robot girl their grandfather built. Together, the two run the café and gradually uncover the secrets he left behind.
The game uses a warm, emotional Japanese-subculture-inspired art style. The Steam page describes its aim as offering players a comforting, healing break from complicated modern life, like sitting down with a warm cup of coffee.
Café Work, Rhythm Programming, and Expeditions
With Lami, players take customer orders and decorate the café. Furniture and decorations can be placed freely, and the layout affects how the café performs. In the workshop, players gather materials to craft items and furniture and upgrade equipment to strengthen Lami’s abilities.
A rhythm game reflects the protagonist’s background as an engineer: players complete development tasks in time with music to build new features or repair broken systems.
Outside the café, players explore regions such as forests and lakeshores to gather materials like ore and wood. When dismantling “Shatters,” artificial debris that has fallen from the sky, with a laser cutter, they also face “Sweepers,” salvage robots that treat the player as an enemy.
The story builds as a strange light appears in the sky and threatens the town’s peaceful routine. The free demo runs about 30 minutes to an hour.
One Developer, and an AI Disclosure
Lemi handles programming, art, and design alone. At the 2026 Bahamut ACG Creation Contest, hosted by the Taiwanese gaming and anime community Bahamut, the game won the fan-voted Popularity Award in the game category out of 66 entries.
The Steam page also discloses the use of generative AI. The developer states that AI assisted with programming, scenario writing, music, textures, and artwork, including the protagonist and item icons.
According to the developer, AI output was not used as-is but was reviewed, edited, and refined, which helped polish the mood and details and shorten development time.
Lemi said the goal was to give people a brief, pleasant, relaxing moment in busy lives, and expressed hope that players would take a break as if with a warm cup of coffee and feel the romance of technology and handcraft coexisting.
Festival Appearances and Launch Plans
Lami: A Cup of Code and Coffee is taking part in the Steam cooking festival from October 13 to 20 and in Steam Next Fest from October 20 to 26.
Full release is planned for 2027, with the Steam store page currently showing “Coming soon” rather than a specific date. The game supports interface and subtitles in 16 languages, including Korean.
Who This Is For
Strong fit for: cozy café and shop-sim fans who want more variety than pure management; players who enjoy rhythm mini-games tied to the story; fans of warm, anime-inspired art and slice-of-life narratives with a mystery thread; Korean-language players, who get full support.
Cautious fit for: players who care about generative AI use, given the developer’s broad disclosure covering programming, writing, music, textures, and artwork; anyone who needs a firm release date.
Less ideal for: players seeking deep, demanding management systems or challenging combat.
The Takeaway
Lami: A Cup of Code and Coffee is a gentle, ambitious solo project: a café sim that also asks you to code in rhythm, explore the wilds, and solve the mystery of a grandfather’s robot. A fan-voted award from Taiwan’s Bahamut community shows early affection, and the developer’s transparency about AI use gives players a clear picture of how it was made. The free demo is available now, with the full game targeted for 2027.
