Stop moving and you die. That is the whole philosophy of FIRESTARTERS, a high-speed first-person shooter from indie developer Studio Kerosene. It pairs anime-styled heroines with brutal arena combat and launches in Steam Early Access on October 28, announced alongside a new trailer.
The game follows a team of gladiators fighting to survive a merciless live-broadcast slaughter show run by a Japanese crime syndicate. Strapped into rocket skates, players tear across the arena against waves of killer androids in fast, violent combat.
Its mix is unusual: bright anime character design, heavy gore, and a story delivered through visual-novel-style cutscenes, all wrapped around hardcore arena shooting.
STEEL: A Gladiator Show Run by Criminals
The setting is a future Japan controlled by organized crime. There, the gladiator survival program STEEL, run by the country’s worst criminal syndicate, has become the most-watched live broadcast in the world.
The organizers care less about whether contestants live than about how entertaining they are to watch. Participants fight for their lives, and only those who survive and thrill the crowd can win their freedom.
The protagonist is Kera, a female inmate who lived as a notorious delinquent in the back alleys of Okinawa. Seeking to atone for her past and win freedom for the new companions she meets, she joins FIRESTARTERS, a gladiator team made up of prisoners.
There are no safety nets and no mercy in the arena. Contestants who aren’t good enough leave in a body bag with their name on it. Kera and her teammates must fight their way through to freedom.
Combat Built Around Constant Aggression
The core of FIRESTARTERS is an aggressive combat system in which standing still makes survival nearly impossible. Kera wears the STEEL Battlesuit, a special combat suit that enhances her physical abilities, along with custom rocket skates that let her move freely across the arena. Gunplay with a range of weapons and high-speed movement combine into fast-paced arena FPS combat.
Unlike most shooters, there are no health pickups or ammo crates. To survive, you have to destroy enemy androids yourself and pull the resources you need from their wreckage. The design rewards hunting enemies down rather than avoiding them.
The crowd matters too. Simply killing enemies and completing a “Storm” isn’t enough. To be recognized as a true champion, you need to move faster and take enemies down with flair to earn high scores.
The developer says the audience loves a gruesome death, but what it wants even more is a champion who dominates the arena. Because players chase survival, spectacle, and score at once, the game demands play built on maximum speed and aggression.
A Custom Engine and Visual-Novel Storytelling
On the technical side, Studio Kerosene built FIRESTARTERS on its own engine, made from scratch. The studio says it focused on minimizing bloated storage use, image degradation from AI upscaling, and stutter caused by shader compilation.
The developer also stresses a philosophy that respecting players starts with keeping minimum specs low.
The story is told through visual-novel-style cutscenes placed between bursts of fast, violent action, giving room to the characters and the world.
The game includes flashing lights and strobe effects, so players with photosensitive epilepsy should take care. The developer provides a warning and also emphasizes that no generative AI tools were used and that all content was made by people.
Quake Meets Rollerdrome
Lead developer Alex Harte said the studio wanted to make a game that floods the player with adrenaline the moment they start playing. In STEEL’s arenas, there are no safety nets, he explained, and the fast movement system pushes players to keep attacking and chasing targets, which is exactly how they survive.
Rock Paper Shotgun described FIRESTARTERS as recalling both the classic shooter Quake and the skating action shooter Rollerdrome, pointing to its blend of fast movement and violent combat as a draw for fans of both.
FIRESTARTERS is planned in four episodes. The Early Access version launching October 28 contains the first episode, and the remaining three will arrive as free updates during Early Access. The game can be wishlisted on Steam now, and a demo is available.
Who This Is For
Strong fit for: movement-shooter fans who loved Quake, ULTRAKILL-style aggression, or Rollerdrome; players who enjoy score-chasing arena combat; fans of anime aesthetics who also want hard-hitting action; anyone who values hand-made content, given the developer’s statement that no generative AI was used; players with modest PCs, given the studio’s focus on low minimum specs.
Cautious fit for: players sensitive to gore or to flashing and strobe effects, which the developer warns about; anyone wary of episodic Early Access, since only one of four episodes is available at launch; buyers who want to know the publisher, which is not confirmed.
Less ideal for: players who prefer cover-based or tactical shooters; those who dislike resource systems that force constant aggression.
The Takeaway
FIRESTARTERS combines three things that rarely share a game: anime visual-novel storytelling, extreme gore, and rocket-skate arena shooting that punishes hesitation. Its custom engine, commitment to low specs, and fully human-made content give it a distinctive technical and creative stance as well. How well Studio Kerosene delivers the remaining three episodes during Early Access will decide whether it lives up to the Quake-meets-Rollerdrome comparison. The demo is available now ahead of the October 28 launch.
Steam Early Access: October 28, 2026 (Episode 1 of 4). Demo and wishlist available now.
