Brighton-based indie duo Clumsy Bear Studio has officially launched their unique card-based adventure, Hungry Horrors, into Steam Early Access. By blending the strategic depth of roguelite deck-builders with the rich, often eerie world of British and Irish folklore, the game offers a “fresh recipe” for fans of the genre.with narrative and rogue-lite mechanics, drawing inspiration from British and Irish folklore.
🥘 Gameplay: Satisfy the Craving
In Hungry Horrors, you play as a princess who must save her kingdom from a ravenous curse. Instead of a sword, you wield a frying pan (or a ladle), and instead of slaying monsters, you must keep them satiated.
- The Craving System: Monsters don’t have health bars; they have appetites. You must master five flavor categories—Sweet, Salty, Bitter, Sour, and Umami—to satisfy their specific cravings before they reach you.
- Culinary Deck-Building: Your cards are real traditional recipes from across the British Isles, such as Haggis, Stargazy Pie, and Cranachan.
- Fatality Animations: Be careful—if you fail to satisfy a “Horror,” you might become the next course. Every monster features a unique (and often humorous) defeat animation.
🧚 A World Steeped in Folklore
The game draws heavily from Celtic, English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh legends. You will encounter legendary creatures such as:
- Black Annis (the blue-faced hag)
- Jenny Greenteeth (the river hag)
- Grendel and Queen Mab
Every NPC and artifact in the game is rooted in authentic regional myths, making the journey through its five biomes (Caves, Woods, Bogs, Meadows, and Town) feel like a dark, whimsical history lesson.
