The Chungbuk Global Game Center has achieved its best performance since its establishment in 2018, marking a milestone year for the region’s game industry.
On November 27, the Center—supported by Cheongju City and operated by the Cheongju Cultural Industry Promotion Foundation—announced that 32 local game companies backed by the Center generated a combined annual revenue of ₩10.01 billion, surpassing the ₩10 billion mark for the first time. This represents a 36% year-on-year increase, far exceeding the Center’s initial 2025 revenue target of ₩7.75 billion.
Record-High Employment Growth
Driven by this strong performance, the Center also posted record employment numbers.
Supported companies hired a total of 100 new employees this year—an increase of more than 15% compared to the previous year. This reflects simultaneous growth in both company scale and the regional game development ecosystem in Chungbuk.
Strategic Support Programs Fuel Success
The Center attributes its performance to several key support initiatives, including:
- Chungbuk Game Academy — Talent development and professional training
- Game Content Production Support — Strengthening the development capabilities of local studios
- Indie Startup Production Support — Early-stage incubation for emerging creators
- Global Commercialization & Advancement Support — Helping companies refine and elevate titles for the global market
In addition, partnerships with the Korea Technology Finance Corporation (KOTEC), Chungcheong Branch helped local game companies secure operational funding. At the same time, collaboration with institutions such as Gyeonggi Game Meister High School contributed to building a steady pipeline of skilled talent.
“Chungbuk Was Once a Game Desert—Now It’s a Growing Hub”
Byun Kwang-seop, CEO of the Cheongju Cultural Foundation, stated:
“Eight years ago, Chungbuk was considered a barren land in terms of game development.
Thanks to sustained support and strong collaboration with local companies, we’ve achieved our greatest results yet.
The real challenge begins now as Chungbuk-based game studios set their sights on the global market.
In 2026, we will continue to expand the game industry ecosystem and secure the next generation of talent.”
Aiming to Become Korea’s Indie Game Hub
Building on this year’s achievements, the Chungbuk Global Game Center plans to enhance its support infrastructure further and establish Chungbuk as “a hub city for young indie game developers.” Ongoing efforts will focus on advancing the industry, fostering stable development environments, and supporting long-term growth for local studios.
