[Review] World War V: Last Call: A Battlefield Where Voxels and Pixels Intersect

        By Editorial Team2025년 11월 17일4 Mins Read

“World War V: Last Call,” a new game developed by Horang, the creator of “Ghost of Oksu Station” and “Ghost of Bongcheon-dong,” is a voxel-based action adventure game from Studio Horang. With a destructible environment and retro-inspired direction that computes over 11 million dynamic voxel fields in real time, it reinterprets the feel of classic action games in a modern way.

        Unique visual style

The game’s most distinctive feature is its unique visual style, which combines voxel-based 3D graphics with pixel art expressions. The unique visuals, created by interweaving 3D voxel-based battlefields with 2D pixel art, evoke a retro sensibility while offering a fresh experience. Author Horang revealed that his love of retro games led him to develop this unique war game that intertwines voxels and pixels.

        Story and Gameplay

The game begins with Lena, a young scientist from the V Empire, fleeing with a secret weapon. The story unfolds as Lena, a tearful genius who uses her textbook as a bulletproof helmet to thwart the V Empire’s ambitions.

This stage-clearing action-adventure game challenges players to clear stages by destroying the terrain, finding hidden items, and creating shortcuts on a voxel-generated battlefield. The destructible environment isn’t merely decorative; it’s a core gameplay element, allowing players to strategically utilize the terrain and create new paths.

Destructible terrain, hidden items, and battles with unique bosses await, boasting a challenging level of difficulty despite its cute visuals.

        Characters and Storytelling

Featuring unique characters like the brash Colonel Freak and the sadistically charming Sophia, the game offers a captivating scenario and a gripping combat experience. The dialogue and direction are lighthearted and humorous, creating a playful experience brimming with tension and humor.

Players face a variety of enemies in a world filled with survival, combat, and oddly serious yet humorous situations. This comedic yet tense tone is maintained consistently throughout the game, leaving players with no time to get bored.

        Developer’s capabilities

While Horang is widely known for his horror webtoons, he’s already been working as a web developer, tool maker, and game developer, pushing the boundaries of creativity even before he achieved fame as a writer. This diverse experience is reflected in World War V: Last Call, which combines comedic storytelling, the timing of his webtoon directing, and his unique technical prowess.

        Market reaction

A demo is currently available on Steam, and nearly 10,000 users have added it to their wishlists in just over a month. The funding project via Tumblbug exceeded its goal immediately after its release, and funding for a physical package centered around retro goods such as a floppy disk-shaped USB drive and a mini CRT monitor is scheduled to run until December 7, 2025.

The latest demonstration demo was unveiled at Booth D23, Exhibition Hall 1, G-STAR 2025, held at BEXCO, Busan from November 13 to 16, 2025. The on-site event was designed to allow visitors to experience the game’s world firsthand, including exhibiting actual package goods and revealing a 1m-tall voxel Lena statue.

        Overall Review

World War V: Last Call is an indie action game that offers a unique experience with its unique blend of voxel and pixel art, strategic gameplay utilizing destructible environments, and a storytelling that blends tension and humor. The charming visuals hide a challenging challenge, and the gameplay reimagines the classic action game experience with a modern twist, promising to satisfy both retro game fans and those seeking a challenge.

This work, which encapsulates the creative journey of author Horang, who went from webtoon artist to game developer, has the potential to bring a breath of fresh air to the Korean indie game scene.
