Korea Game Developers Association holds ‘GIGDC 2023’, the Korean indie game contest

    By Editorial Team2023년 04월 27일Updated:2023년 06월 24일3 Mins Read

The Korea Game Developers Association (Chairman Seok-Hee Jeong), sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and supervised by the Korea Creative Content Agency, is holding the ‘2023 Global Indie Game Contest’ (hereinafter referred to as the ‘Contest’) to discover creative and original indie games. ‘ with the slogan.

GIGDC, which started as the first indie game contest in 2003, has been a Korean indie game contest since 2012 to expand the domestic game industry base by encouraging the production of creative and original game content and vitalizing the indie game production culture. The name was changed, and with the high competition rate of more than 300 works submitted yearly, it has become a cradle for discovering Korean indie game developers.

Any indie game creator from middle school or high school can participate, and the final 20 excellent teams will be selected and awarded prize money of over 30.4 million won by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea Creative Content Agency President, and the Korea Game Developers Association.

This contest will be accepted through the official website from June 26 (Mon) to July 6 (Thu). The screening process will be held on the schedule of holding an awards ceremony on November 3 (Fri) after announcing a total of 20 award-winning works on August 18 (Fri) after preliminary and final rounds.

Individuals or teams of up to 10 people can participate in this contest, and only one division per work among the production division and the planning division can participate. Both divisions can participate as long as it is not the same work.

This contest has been running a domestic support program since 2019 to strengthen the development capabilities of the winners. Winners are provided with technical lectures and opportunities to participate in Winners Camp’s customized lectures for each producer level, and mentoring participants are provided with various benefits such as a training certificate issued by the host company, incubating support to continue game production activities, and an opportunity to interview game startups. Is going to be In addition, promotional support will be provided to inform more game users by producing and distributing award-winner interview articles and promotional videos for award-winning works.

In this contest, we plan to operate an overseas support program that allows winners to attend overseas game events to strengthen their capabilities for global advancement. Only adult winners of the university and general divisions can apply for this program, and about 5 people are selected through document screening and interviews.

Selected personnel are provided with support for travel expenses such as airfare, lodging, and interpretation, and opportunities such as business meetups with overseas game developers and visits to game developers are given through observation of excellent overseas game events.

In this contest, in cooperation with Smilegate’s “Stove Indie” platform, winners will have the opportunity to showcase their works to more game users. Stove Indy is the only indie game platform operated by a domestic game company and is gaining popularity among indie game makers. Through this cooperation, various award-winning works are promoted, and events and special lectures for winners are held, making the contest even more exciting with Stove Indie. It is hoped that it will operate in a variety of ways.
