- A debut work by a solo Greek developer inspired by a trip to a traditional Japanese village
- A girl’s journey to find a lost cat… Steam demo released on August 11
- A watercolor-style, hand-drawn healing adventure completed entirely by one person, from art to story.
One-person development studio POFUPOFU STUDIOS will release a free demo of the hand-drawn watercolor-style healing adventure ‘Seina: A Tale of Spirits’ on Steam on the 11th.
The new game ‘Seina: Spirit Story’ is a healing adventure game that depicts the journey of a girl named Mika who steps into the mysterious world of spirits to find her missing pet cat, Seina.
The game completely eliminates intense combat or time limits, maximizing the fun of allowing users to freely explore the world at their own pace and discover small secrets hidden everywhere.
In particular, it is characterized by putting ‘non-verbal direction’ at the forefront, conveying the story through characters’ subtle gestures and facial expressions, as well as clues embedded in the surrounding environment, rather than relying on textual dialogue.
‘Seina: Spirit Story’ features beautiful, hand-drawn watercolor-style backgrounds.
Graphics designed by the developer, inspired by a trip to a traditional Japanese village, such as foggy forests and moss-covered shrines, blend with a gentle soundtrack to create a meditative and calm atmosphere.
This game, currently under development with Unreal Engine 5, will release a free demo on Steam on the 11th (11 AM UK local time) and begin collecting user feedback in earnest.
The journey of Mika, a girl who sets out to find her missing cat, Seina.
The player takes on the role of the protagonist girl ‘Mika,’ who sets out to find her pet cat ‘Seina,’ who suddenly disappeared one day, and the story begins in earnest.
The place Mika accidentally stepped into while chasing Seina is a mysterious world of spirits where the memories of nature and ancient legends come alive. Shrines forgotten in time, lush forests, and kind spirits who warmly watch over her journey fill this unknown space.
Throughout the story, Mika chooses deep communion with the surrounding environment and spirits instead of physical combat, coming to realize that all beings constituting the world are closely interconnected.
In particular, as you explore the mysterious ruins covered in moss and plants, the reason why Seina ended up here becomes clear, and furthermore, the special bond between the protagonist and this world is gradually revealed.
A quiet story conveyed through gestures and scenery rather than dialogue
Instead of fast-paced progression, the new title ‘Seina: Spirit Story’ focuses on a deep experience of slowly wandering through the world and discovering the stories hidden within.
Players interact with various animal spirits encountered during their journey and unfold their adventure by solving simple puzzles that anyone can enjoy without pressure. In particular, the narrative is characterized by being naturally conveyed through the characters’ detailed gestures and facial expressions, as well as clues embedded in the surrounding environment, rather than through traditional dialogue or cutscenes.
The more closely you observe the traces of the world, the more the old memories residing in the shrine awaken, and the spirits respond to every small touch and action of the player with lively reactions.
The true value of the game lies in the complete absence of stress factors such as compulsive combat or time limits. The design stands out for its thoughtful approach, allowing players to fully immerse themselves solely in the act of exploring the world and discovering hidden narratives.
A one-person development project that started with a trip to a traditional Japanese village
‘Seina: Spirit Story’ is the debut title currently being developed by Greek developer Argyro Brotsi, who is handling the art, story, and game design all by himself.
Brooch conceived the work based on impressions received during his first trip to Japan in 2024. In an interview, he explained, “The scenery of quiet rural villages left a greater impression on me than the flashy big cities,” adding, “The feeling that even small moments in daily life have meaning became the starting point for ‘Seina: Spirit Story’.”
In addition, mentioning that he did not initially aim for solo development, he said, “The biggest advantage of developing alone is that I can fully incorporate my ideas without worrying about what others think and work at my own pace.”
Steady interest from overseas media… First user reactions revealed on the 11th
Since its first reveal last December, ‘Seina: Spirit Story’ has been consistently featured in numerous overseas game media outlets, including Gematsu, GamerBraves, Console Creatures, Creative Bloq, and IndieGames.
In particular, it has garnered attention for the hand-drawn watercolor world realized by a solo developer using Unreal Engine 5 and for the personal experiences derived from a trip to Japan being incorporated into the work. Currently, there are three curator reviews registered on the Steam page.
The developer plans to check actual user reactions to the gameplay for the first time through a free demo to be released on the 11th. Prior to this, applications for a pre-experience trial targeting content creators are also underway.
The game supports interfaces and subtitles in 23 languages, including Korean, and offers English voice acting. The official release is scheduled for sometime in 2026.
The new title ‘Seina: Spirit Story’ is a healing adventure game that puts warm watercolor-style visuals, quiet exploration, and the touching emotions derived from small discoveries at the forefront, rather than flashy action or fierce battles.
In particular, the unique, lyrical worldview built by the development team based on inspiration from their actual travels in Japan catches the eye. With the free demo scheduled for the 11th, anticipation is building regarding what kind of emotion and lasting impression this warm, hand-drawn watercolor world will convey to players.
