Info Revealed for ‘Pixel Washer,’ a High-Pressure Washing Adventure with a 16-Bit Retro CD Vibe

    By Editorial Team2026년 05월 31일4 Mins Read
    • Developed by indie developer Matt Hackett (Valadria), publishing contract signed with Acclaim Inc.
    • Pixel art with a 16-bit Sega CD/Turbo Duo vibe, pixel artist Alessandro Marani in charge of visuals
    • Positive community reaction to Itch.io demo, attention on se7en.ws and GameSpot databases… Steam Deck support planned

What would the 3D cleaning simulation game ‘Powerwash Simulator,’ which has surpassed 17 million cumulative players, look like if transferred to a 60FPS pixel art world? ‘Pixel Washer,’ a high-pressure cleaning adventure game developed by indie developer Matt Hackett (Valadria) and published by Acclaim Inc., has been officially announced.

Pixel artist Alessandro Marani participated in the project, bringing visuals inspired by the 16-bit retro aesthetic of the Sega CD and Turbo Duo eras. Players must clean up a pixel village covered in dust and pollution and restore over 40 handcrafted stages one by one.

Sega CD A pixel world capturing the era’s 16-bit sensibility… from museums to pigsty

Pixel Washer focuses on a bright and arcade-style gameplay feel rather than realistic cleaning simulation. Various locations, such as parks, docks, arcades, museums, and multiplex cinemas, are brought to life as unique pixel art stages.

The core fun of the game lies in the process of thoroughly cleaning a dinosaur fossil museum covered in mud and contaminants with a high-pressure washer, or restoring a messy pigsty into a sparkling pixelated space. The visual spectacle of the contaminated screen gradually being cleaned up and the space coming anew maximizes the unique thrill and visual satisfaction characteristic of cleaning games.

Developer Matt Hackett explained the game’s design philosophy, stating, “We clearly know what this game is and what it isn’t. Players can choose the level they want and clean it slowly at their own pace. There is absolutely no need to rush.”

The sound design also aligns with this direction. The cheerful sound effect of water washing away piles of pixels blends with 16-bit style retro background music, and the auditory pleasure also supports the fun of the game.

Clean, collect, upgrade… lightweight business simulation structure

The gameplay structure is simple but features repetitive progression elements. Players clean dirty sprites to collect hidden money and trinkets, which can be used to upgrade cleaning equipment. The more powerful the cleaning machine acquired, the more challenging quests and contaminated areas can be tackled.

The game supports a radar feature that locates remaining dirty pixels, and adds to the fun of exploration through hidden interactive elements and secret content scattered throughout. Beyond simple cleaning, lighthearted business simulation elements form the core of the campaign progression.

Player feedback is actively continuing in the ‘Dirty Demo’ version currently released on Itch.io. Users have expressed positive reactions to the concept and offered suggestions regarding the difficulty of finding remaining contaminated pixels and improvements to camera controls; the developers are also communicating with the community by directly incorporating these modifications through comments.

New work by solo developer and author Matt Hackett… Publishing collaboration with Acclaim

Pixel Washer is a long-term project by Matt Hackett, who runs the one-man development studio Valadria. He is known as the author of the game development book ‘How to Make a Video Game All By Yourself’ and a developer who previously released ‘Witchmore’.

This title has been sharing its development process with the community by releasing a development log since 2023, and Acclaim Inc., known for titles such as ‘Ground Zero Hero’ and ‘Furyball: Rogue Revenge’, has joined as a publisher.

Currently, the Steam page for Pixel Washer is public, and a demo version is available via media request.

Combining retro 16-bit aesthetics with the relaxing gameplay characteristic of healing cleaning games, Pixel Washer is a title that transforms the simple act of cleaning into visual and auditory satisfaction. Many cleaning simulation enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the upcoming release of this unique indie project, wondering what kind of synergy will be created by the convergence of pixel art and the addictive loops unique to high-pressure cleaning.
