The Korea Creative Content Agency (hereinafter referred to as KOCCA) announced on the 29th of last month that it had published a user survey report on cultural content such as games, comics/webtoons, animations, and music in 2024. The 2024 game user survey is scheduled to be published on December 30th.
The content genre-specific user survey is a report published annually to support establishing domestic content industry policies and content companies’ business strategies based on user statistics. The survey questions are supplemented to match the rapidly changing content industry and technology environment, thereby increasing the reliability and effectiveness of the survey results.
This published report consists of five types: A survey was conducted on the status of content usage and awareness, including basic usage status by genre, overall usage experience, and available spending amount, targeting 8,000 game users (10,000 including non-users for the usage rate survey) and 14,000 users of comics/webtoons, animations, characters, and music content among those aged 10 to 69 nationwide (3 to 69 years old for animation and characters) who have used the game over the past year.
According to the 2024 Game User Survey, a usage rate survey conducted on 10,000 people, including those who do not play games, showed that the game usage rate in the past year was 59.9%, a 3%p % decrease from the previous year.
Meanwhile, in a detailed survey of 8,000 game users, the mobile game usage rate increased by 7.1%p year-on-year to 91.7%, the console game usage rate increased by 2.6%p year-on-year to 26.7%, while the PC game usage rate decreased by 7.2%p year-on-year to 53.8%.
The average daily game usage time was 171 minutes on weekdays and 253 minutes on weekends, an increase of 12 minutes each year compared to the previous year. Looking at each platform, the daily PC and mobile game usage time increased on weekdays and weekends compared to last year, while console game usage decreased.
This year’s survey included a new question about indie game usage. The survey results showed that 28% of PC, mobile, and console game users have experience using indie games. Indie game users responded that they accessed games in the following order: gameplay and review videos (41%), store rankings (34%), and recommendations from friends, acquaintances, and family (33.3%).
The reasons for playing indie games were light and convenient game concepts (54.4%), fresh game material (49.3%), simple controls (34.8%), and short playtime (22%). The regrets were the uncertainty of the release of sequels (37.6%), slow game updates and error corrections (33.3%), and lack of marketing and promotion (33%).
