Solo-developed Incremental City-building Game ‘Hearth and Hamlet’ Surpasses 100,000 Units in First Week

    By Editorial Team2026년 08월 28일5 Mins Read
    • Australian solo developer’s debut title sells 50,000 copies on release day, followed by 100,000 copies in first week
    • From campfires to a magical kingdom, a cozy fantasy city that expands with clicks and growth

“Hearth and Hamlet,” a cozy-feeling incremental city-building game developed by Australian one-person developer Phorust Studios, has surpassed 100,000 units in sales in its first week of release.

“Hearth and Hamlet,” officially released on August 19, sold approximately 50,000 copies in the first 24 hours after launch and surpassed 100,000 cumulative sales within a week. Over 1,500 user reviews have been registered on Steam to date.

Characterized by warm pixel art and a relaxed atmosphere, ‘Hearth and Hamlet’ is also drawing attention as the first major release from indie publisher Runic Forge.

From campfire to kingdom, incremental city building that expands with a click

‘Hearth and Hamlet’ is a medieval-style incremental city-building game where you start in a small settlement and build a massive fantasy kingdom.

Players assign increasing villagers to gather resources and expand their settlement by constructing various buildings such as markets, town halls, barracks, banks, and magic academies.

As the kingdom grows in size, you can engage in trade and diplomatic policies by interacting with other settlements across the sea. Through this, you can secure exotic resources and mysterious artifacts, and accelerate the kingdom’s development.

Managing the happiness of citizens to earn production bonuses, while recruiting soldiers and guards to defend the settlement from dangerous beasts and external raids, is also an important factor.

Researching new technologies allows you to permanently acquire buildings, magic, and various upgrades, creating a structure where the kingdom’s scale and productivity grow together as the game progresses.

A cozy fantasy world realized with warm pixel art

One of the biggest features of ‘Her and Hamlet’ is its warm-colored pixel art graphics.

Various environments, such as lakes, rivers, magical swamps, and exotic regions across the sea, are depicted in pixel art, and you can visually see a small camp gradually growing into a huge city and castle.

Overseas review media positively evaluated that the project went beyond simply implementing a retro style, noting that the distinct shapes of each building were immediately recognizable and that the village’s character became more pronounced as it grew.

In particular, the process of the settlement, which started as a tent, evolving into a city and a castle, is praised for effectively conveying the game’s sense of growth. The overall visuals and atmosphere have also often been noted as reminiscent of the farm simulation game ‘Stardew Valley’.

The soundtrack is also cited as an element that supports the game’s atmosphere. One overseas review noted that the comfortable and atmospheric music effectively brings out the cozy identity of ‘Hearth and Hamlet’.

Australian Solo Developer’s Debut Title Secures Anticipation Even Before Release

Phorust Studios is a new development studio run by a solo developer based in Australia, and ‘Herst and Hamlet’ is their first work.

The game was released through Runic Forge, the publishing brand of RUNE, a UK-based indie marketing and publishing company. This title is also Runic Forge’s first major publishing title.

‘Herrs and Hamlet’ steadily built recognition even before its official release. It unveiled a demo at the Steam Medieval Fest held in April 2026 and also participated in the Steam Next Fest in June.

The cumulative number of players for the pre-release demo exceeded 100,000, and the wishlist also recorded over 125,000 items before the official launch. This pre-launch interest led to sales of 50,000 copies on the first day and 100,000 copies in the first week.

Mixed detailed evaluations amidst ‘mixed positive’ assessment

User response since launch has been generally positive. Currently, there are about 1,600 reviews on Steam, 79% of which rate the game positively, giving it a ‘Mostly Positive’ rating.

Overseas review outlets are also generally giving favorable reviews. One outlet rated ‘Hearth and Hamlet’ as one of the most addictive and cozy incremental games of 2026, praising the fact that it gives the feeling of the real world growing rather than just numbers increasing.

On the other hand, some media outlets have raised concerns regarding the lack of depth as a city-building game. It has been pointed out that while it is satisfying as a cozy clicker game, users expecting a traditional city-building game may perceive it as a somewhat different experience.

Based on user reviews, the main strengths include attractive pixel art, a cozy atmosphere, the growth process of developing from a small camp into a city, and a reasonable playtime of about 10 to 15 hours.

The success of ‘Hearth & Hamlet’ is no mere coincidence. It overcame the inherent limitations of being a solo developer debut title and fully translated the high level of user interest into explosive results.

Reaching the 100,000 mark in the first week and receiving a ‘mostly positive’ response on Steam signify solid fundamental strength. It is judged that the key to turning this enjoyable early surge into a long-term narrative of success ultimately lies in the completeness of the city-building elements to be introduced in the future and continuous updates.
