Reconstructing a Legacy: Watercolor Healing Puzzle ‘A Storied Life: Tabitha’ Launches

    By Editorial Team2026년 04월 16일3 Mins Read
    • The Concept: A poignant narrative puzzle where you sort through the belongings of a deceased woman to finish her memoir.
    • The Mechanic: A blend of inventory management (think Unpacking meets Resident Evil grid puzzles) and branching narrative choices.
    • The Vibe: A cozy, watercolor-painted British countryside cottage filled with “soft” sounds and emotional weight.
    • The Team: Developed by Lab42 Games (a Sumo Digital studio) and published by Secret Mode.

What remains of a life once the person is gone? In A Storied Life: Tabitha, now available on Steam and Nintendo Switch, players are tasked with answering that question one box at a time. It’s a game about the difficult choices of what to keep, what to sell, and how we remember those who are no longer here.

One Life, One Box: The Puzzle of Memory

The game follows the aftermath of Tabitha’s passing. Before her death, she had contracted to publish a memoir, but the manuscript was damaged. As you clear out her “Lavender Lace” cottage in Yorkshire, you must reconstruct her story.

    • Spatial Strategy: This isn’t just a simple hidden-object game. You must physically fit items into a limited storage box. You can fold letters to save space or use bubble wrap for fragile heirlooms. The weight and arrangement of items matter—if it’s too heavy, you’ll need to reinforce the box with tape.
    • The Power of Choice: You can only keep a single box of memories. Every item you choose to save unlocks specific “keywords.” These words are used to fill in the blanks of Tabitha’s memoir.
    • Branching Identity: Your organizational choices define who Tabitha was. Depending on what you prioritize, she could be remembered as a devoted mother, a trailblazing botanist, or a woman hidden in the shadows of mysticism.

    The Aesthetics of “Soft” Grief

Visually, the game is a masterclass in the “cozy” aesthetic.

    • Watercolor Art: The hand-drawn environments are clean yet warm, capturing the gentle clutter of an elderly person’s home.
    • Tactile Audio: Much like A Little to the Left, the sound design is incredibly satisfying. The creak of a cupboard door or the soft rustle of a folded sweater provides a sensory layer that makes the cottage feel lived-in.
    • Atmospheric Narrative: As you empty each room, the visual shift to a bare, quiet space serves as a silent, moving tribute to the passage of time.

    A Partnership of Trust

Lab42 Games, known for their high-quality porting work on titles like Sonic Mania and Metal: Hellsinger VR, is stepping into the spotlight with this original IP. The project was born from an idea by writer Cherish Goldstraw, who brought the concept to the studio’s leadership.

Partnering with Secret Mode—the publisher behind the hit organizer A Little to the Left—seems like a perfect fit. They’ve successfully targeted the “healing game” community, and early Steam reviews suggest that A Storied Life: Tabitha is being embraced as a unique entry in the “unboxing” genre.
