- Four days of high school student Kirill operating a kiosk… The trial version is about 1 to 2 hours long.
- A pixel art simulation that solves neighborhood cases while selling pirated discs and cup noodles.
Indie game studio perelesoq has released a free demo of its new story-driven simulation game , ‘Lenin Street Geek Shop,’ on Steam.
‘Lenin Street Geek Shop’ is a unique simulation game set in the early 2000s where players operate a street kiosk (store) frequented by subculture fans known as ‘otaku’. Players become the store owner and manage the shop by interacting with various customers.
The game evokes deep nostalgia for those who, as children, bought snacks at neighborhood stores or browsed through bootleg discs, dreaming of becoming a store owner at least once. With its subculture sensibilities from the turn of the century and the early millennium, and the unique atmosphere created by the analog setting of a street stall, this is a work capable of conveying a cozy feeling to those who lived through that era.
Kirill, the boy who quit school for his mother’s sea voyages
The player takes on the role of Kirill, a high school student who quit school to buy his mother a beach vacation and save money for a better life, and operates a kiosk for four days.
The items sold in the store perfectly capture the analog sensibility of that era. From nostalgic pirated game discs like ‘Whole-Life 2’ and ‘Fast Family Fun’ to sticky hands, Frustyle drinks, and cup noodles, the shelves are filled with these items.
You can also experience unique business activities, such as making backroom deals with suspicious figures and selling ‘Krotovukha’ for three times the price.
There are also realistic choices that add to the fun of the simulation. You can gain unfair profits by intentionally giving customers less change, but such wrongdoing will soon spread by word of mouth and result in damaging the store’s reputation.
Fog battles with neighborhood kids, mini-games, and kiosk decorating
In addition to operating the kiosk, a variety of activities and events await the player.
You can collect items by playing ‘pogs’ (paper flipping) against neighborhood kids or enjoy mini-games on the PC, and you can also decorate your own shop using posters and signs. In particular, unique interaction elements have been provided, such as feeding a mysterious creature living in a shack next to the kiosk.
If you go out into the streets, you become deeply entangled in the various problems of the neighborhood residents.
The diverse narratives within the analog community, such as preventing the spread of ‘pixelpox’ among children, mediating reconciliation between opposing rival subculture groups, and helping lovers escape from strict fathers, are expected to further enhance the fun of the simulation.
Pixel art and PS1-style 3D graphics… 1-2 hour demo
The game combines richly colored pixel art with PS1-style 3D graphics reminiscent of early 2000s games. Perelesoq stated that they did not use AI in the game and created all the textures, 3D models, music, and text themselves.
The released demo version has about 1 to 2 hours of gameplay and contains exclusive story scenes and items that can only be seen in the demo version.
Players will experience the hectic daily life of a kiosk owner in a condensed way, ranging from street fights, romantic commotions, and dealing with difficult customers to pixel chickenpox outbreaks, beatboxing lessons, and secret deals with customers.
In addition, completing special quests rewards players with rare items and hidden animated videos usable in the upcoming official version. Regarding this, developer perelesoq is stimulating users’ desire to collect the rewards by stating, “Unlike the ‘fake hidden endings’ that childhood friends insisted existed, these rewards actually exist.”
A new game from perelesoq, the developer of ‘Torn Away’
perelesoq is a small indie studio formed in 2019, with the core goal of creating works focused on deep narratives and sensory audiovisual direction.
In 2023, the company released the adventure game ‘Torn Away,’ which tells the heartbreaking story of a child during World War II, and received critical acclaim. The title subsequently expanded to console platforms and was recognized for its development capabilities by winning awards at numerous international game ceremonies.
The developer stated, “We have continued game production without giving up despite financial difficulties,” adding, “Through this new title, we want to present a story filled with deep empathy, humor, and warm comfort to those who have lived through the same era.”
‘Lenin Street Geek Shop’ is raising expectations for the official version by capturing unique themes that stimulate analog sensibilities, the inherent fun of simulation, and the narrative depth provided by moral choices.
A free demo of the game is currently available on Steam, and the official release schedule and specific platform information will be announced sequentially at a later date.
