A Throwback to Classic Flight Sims with Full Cockpit Interaction
Independent developer Park Hee-jong has officially released his latest title, “Defender Recon by Park Hee-jong,” on Steam — a low-poly helicopter combat simulator inspired by the golden era of 486-era flight games.
The game features a fully interactive cockpit system, allowing players to manually operate switches, dials, and gauges for a highly tactile experience. By blending the realism of traditional flight simulators with the accessibility of arcade shooters, Defender Recon recreates the charm of early PC aviation titles while modernizing them with smooth controls and immersive features.
Gameplay: Tactical Support and Combat Missions
Players pilot the MD 500 “Defender” scout helicopter through randomly generated battlefields, taking on a range of missions including troop support, enemy elimination, and strategic reconnaissance.
The simulation offers versatile gameplay modes — equipping different weapon systems to engage infantry, vehicles, and anti-aircraft targets, or switching to a transport configuration to deploy special forces.
Beyond standard keyboard and mouse or joystick controls, Defender Recon also supports TrackIR and VR headsets, offering enhanced immersion for dedicated simulation enthusiasts.
Free-to-Play with Optional Supporter Edition
Defender Recon is free to play on Steam, with an optional Supporter Edition available for purchase. This edition adds an upgraded playable helicopter — the MD 530F, an enhanced variant of the base MD 500MG model.
Players can find more information, updates, and community discussions on the game’s official Steam Store page.
A Love Letter to Retro Flight Simulation
With its minimalist visuals, grounded physics, and nostalgic tone, Defender Recon captures the essence of 1990s flight simulators while adding modern polish. It stands as a testament to one developer’s dedication to reviving the retro combat sim genre for a new generation of players.
Park Hee-jong’s Defender Recon is free to play on Steam, with an optional Supporter Edition available for purchase. The Supporter Edition includes the MD 530F, an upgraded version of the game’s default playable aircraft, the MD 500MG.
