▶ Creature-collecting Metroidvania inspired by the developers’ pet dogs
▶ Creature collection, alien planet exploration, companion rover system… Scheduled for release in 2026
Indie game publisher Team17 and developer Observer Interactive released a new lore trailer on March 12 for ‘Rover’s Tale,’ a creature-collecting Metroidvania that is a tribute to pets.
The game, formerly known as ‘Good Boy’, unveiled a new gameplay video and a free Steam demo along with the title change. The trailer was first revealed at the Future Games Show Spring Showcase and garnered significant attention during GDC 2026.
Old dogs become stars… The worldview of the LAIKA program
Inspired by the developers’ real-life pet dogs, ‘Rovers’ Tale’ is an ecosystem-based Metroidvania game that features a warm tribute to companion animals and an emotional story.
The game’s core worldview begins with the ‘LAIKA Program.’ This project is a fictional program that transplants the consciousness of a pet dog that has passed away due to old age into a robot body to explore the universe.
The story begins with the detection of anomalies on the remote planet Terra II. Human explorers are dispatched to investigate, but after a rough landing, they send out a distress signal, which awakens the LAIKA rover that was dormant nearby.
Afterwards, human explorers and robot dog Rover explore the living ecosystem of Terra II together, uncovering the secrets hidden on the planet and traces of ancient civilizations.
Please name my dog
The development team wanted gamers to experience their own unique rover, rather than just a single character. Therefore, a feature was introduced allowing gamers to name their in-game rover after their own pet dog. It is notable that the game is designed to connect memories with the gamer’s adventures, whether they have a dog that has passed away or one they currently live with.
The title change is also related to this direction. The development team explained that they changed the name to ‘Rober’s Tale’ to improve searchability and brand awareness, as ‘Good Boy’ had already been used as the title of a horror movie.
From collecting creatures to exploring ancient ruins… rich gameplay
Terra II, the setting of the game, is a vast alien planet composed of diverse biomes ranging from dense forests to swamps and snow-capped mountains. Each region features unique creatures and challenges, which players must overcome by combining creature abilities and upgrades.
Exploration does not stop at the surface. You can uncover the history of Terra II’s lost civilizations by exploring massive cave systems and ancient temples. Questions about who built these structures and where they disappeared to drive the core narrative of the adventure.
The game features a diverse rover companion system. You can find sleeping robot dog companions, reboot them, complete quests, and retrieve their past stories through memory tapes. Through the rover customization feature, you can equip new tools and gear, maximize exploration capabilities by upgrading the motherboard, and personalize their appearance with fashion items.
Another axis of the story is the human explorer. He appears in the game as a character with a 24-hour activity schedule, and the process of him gradually regaining his confidence while with the rovers forms the emotional core of the story.
A North England indie studio combining over 60 years of AAA experience
Developer Observer Interactive is an independent game studio founded in 2023 based in Northern England. The members consist of veterans with a combined career spanning over 60 years of experience in AAA, AA, and indie game development.
The team promotes “retro sensibility for modern gamers” as its development philosophy, pursuing creative gaming experiences that can be produced by a small team. ‘Rovers’ Tale’ is the studio’s first title and a representative project that demonstrates this philosophy.
Explosive reaction immediately after Trailer’s reveal… “Most anticipated indie of the year”
The gaming community’s reaction was enthusiastic immediately after the trailer was released. Gamers, thrilled by the game’s emotional story, cute robot dog companion, and Metroidvania-style rescue, rushed to add it to their Steam wishlists, while reviews poured in praising the game for combining the charms of DREDGE and WALL-E.
The game has elicited a particularly strong emotional response among gamers who have lost a pet dog, and reactions expressing a desire to name the Rover after their own dogs are continuing across various social media platforms. It is considered the most unique and highly anticipated Metroidvania title in the Nintendo Switch II lineup, and the prevailing opinion is that it is a rare combination of creature collection, emotional storytelling, and sci-fi exploration all blended together.
A Rovers’ Tale is scheduled for release in 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, and a free demo is currently available on Steam. In the demo, you can explore the first biome, ‘Pastoral Prairie,’ and experience the creature capture mechanics firsthand.
