“In a World After People” (Japanese title: 人のいない世界に), a pixel adventure game currently under development by Japanese solo indie developer Yuji under the name YORUROJI, has confirmed its participation in Steam Next Fest, which opens this coming October.
‘In a World After People’ tells the story of a robot that awakens alone after humanity has disappeared. The game has captivated global users with its deep pixel art depicting desolate yet beautiful ruined landscapes, and is currently sailing smoothly with over 10,000 Steam wishlists .
‘Ribera’, a robot awakened in a world where humanity has disappeared
The protagonist of the work is ‘Libera,’ a robot who awakens alone after the extinction of humanity. Although a reboot was scheduled by someone, no trace of humans remains in the world she opens her eyes to.
As Rivera, the player must explore a ruined world to find their forgotten mission. In this process, they encounter a unique narrative where they collect various items, confront traces of the past, and gradually expand their understanding of the vanished humans.
According to the Steam store page, the main game offers about 2 hours of playtime.
There are a total of two endings, and the developer explained that “both are true endings,” foreshadowing a deep lingering impression depending on the user’s choices. In particular, the game’s unique lyrical and melancholic sentiment, summarized by the line “Robots are not needed in a world without people,” is stirring the sensibilities of indie game fans.
Deep pixel art and serene sound
The game’s graphics are centered on modern pixel art that emphasizes depth and lighting effects. The developers stated that they focused on portraying a ruined world as lonely and quiet, yet warm and beautiful. The Steam page features tags such as ‘atmospheric’, ’emotional’, ‘philosophical’, ‘post-apocalyptic’, and ‘robot’.
Quiet sound is also a key element of the game. The Steam store page describes it as featuring a quiet and immersive soundscape. Three early-game background music tracks released on a YouTube channel are said to capture a uniquely serene and emotional atmosphere, further raising expectations for the game’s mise-en-scène.
The game supports a total of five languages, adding Korean and Traditional Chinese to the existing Japanese, English, and Simplified Chinese. According to the Steam page, support covers the interface and subtitles. Currently, machine translation is being used, but the developer has stated that they plan to collaborate with professional translators to improve translation quality upon the official release.
Japanese solo-developed title surpasses 10,000 wishlists, drawing media attention.
YORUROJI is a Japanese solo game development circle. Developer Yuji is working alone on ‘In a World After People’. A publisher has not yet been determined, and YORUROJI is listed as both the developer and publisher on the Steam page. The full version is scheduled to be released on Windows and Mac.
The news that the wishlist had surpassed 10,000 items was reported by Japanese media last July, along with the release of a major update to the demo version and a new PV. Famitsu, Denpa Miniko Gamer, Game Biz, and others introduced the game at the time, stating that the graphics, story, sound, and gameplay experience of the demo version had been significantly improved.
A solo developer title with over 10,000 wishlist items will meet more users through Steam Next Fest. The demo is about 15 minutes long, allowing you to get a feel for the game’s atmosphere without any pressure.
With the addition of Korean language support, accessibility for domestic users has also increased. The official version is scheduled to be released by the end of March 2027, and the publisher and price have not yet been determined.
