- A retro maze bomb game spanning Amiga from 30 years ago to the latest consoles
- Supports Amiga 500 through PS5… Provides 1,000 levels and 4-player battles
The retro maze bomb game ‘KABOOMANIA’ by German indie studio Fancy Factory was released simultaneously on PC (Windows, Mac, Linux), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, iPhone, and iPad on August 12.
What is particularly eye-catching is that it runs officially on actual retro hardware released about 30 years ago, such as the Commodore Amiga 500, Amiga 1200, and CD32.
The developer emphasized that ‘Kabumania’ is not a simple remake or a clone of an existing work, but a game that reinterprets the formula of classic maze bomb games. The game offers 1,000 handmade levels across five themed worlds and features various enemies, explosive power-ups, and a local couch battle mode that can be enjoyed by up to four players.
Amiga Reinterprets the Classic Maze Bomb in 1,200 Pixel Art
‘Kabumania’ was created using 320×256 resolution pixel art utilizing the Amiga 1200’s 128-color AGA palette. A separate 32-color exclusive version is also provided for original Amiga 500 users.
The game features five themed worlds and a total of 1,000 handcrafted levels. The key is to navigate through mazes using explosive power-ups and enemy characters with different behavior patterns.
In addition, it supports a local couch battle mode that up to four people can enjoy together, bringing out the unique fun of arcade games where you can compete with friends.
Chris Hülsbeck of ‘Turican’ returns to Ami for sound
The music was handled by Chris Huelsbeck, a composer representative of the Amiga era known for works such as ‘Turrican’ and ‘The Great Giana Sisters’.
In particular, the fact that the same music is implemented in different ways depending on the platform is unique.
While the latest modern platforms provide the rich sound of a full-production version, the original Amiga version perfectly reproduces the unique sensibility and fidelity of the hardware using music from the ProTracker MOD, created by Wheelsbeck’s longtime collaborator Fabian Del Priore.
A German studio starting with Kickstarter and preparing a physical edition
Fancy Factory is an indie studio based in Arnstadt, Germany, founded by Axel Friedrich in 2008. It has released works in various genres, including mobile games, casual puzzles, 3D adventures, and retro arcade games.
‘Cabumania’ is a project that started development based on the original AmiGa hardware and then expanded its scope to modern platforms.
During the development process, a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign was conducted, raising 7,631 euros from 96 backers, significantly exceeding the target of 3,500 euros, which gave momentum to the development.
A physical Amiga edition for collectors is also scheduled to be released in the future. It will include a physical box, manual, and disc, and the specific release schedule will be announced later.
Although it is early in the launch, the community is reacting positively.
As ‘Cabuminia’ has just been officially released, official scores have not yet been compiled on major platforms such as Steam and Metacritic, as sufficient reviews have not yet accumulated.
However, the itch.io community that experienced the game during development praised it for faithfully implementing the gameplay of Bomber Man and Dyna Blaster while also effectively preserving the Amiga’s signature pixel art and music. In particular, there were reactions that the game’s fun was further enhanced in multiplayer.
Amiga Bill, a prominent figure in the Amiga community, also praised the game’s high level of polish in a press release. Some international media outlets have also described it as an exceptional new title for Bomber Man fans and one of the indie games of the year that best showcases a strong retro vibe.
However, as it is currently early in the official launch, it remains to be seen how user reviews and evaluations by professional media will develop in the future.
‘Cabumania’ takes a rather unique path among recent retro games in that it connects Amiga hardware from over 30 years ago with the latest PCs and consoles into a single game.
With a relatively low price of 9.90 euros ($9.90) and free demos available via Steam and itch.io, it is a title worth trying without hesitation for users who want the feel of classic arcade games and local multiplayer.
