- An infinite build completed with 5 heroes, 400 Demon Chips, and 13 types of card enchantments
- Achieved a ‘Very Positive’ rating with 91% positive reviews out of 173 Steam reviews just four days after launch.
Breaker Games, an indie game studio based in Shanghai, China, officially released the roguelike card battler ‘Apokerlypse’ on Steam on April 29.
The game aims to expand the genre by supporting easy accessibility, deep deck building, asynchronous PvP, and real-time multiplayer, and has been receiving high praise from users since its launch with the release of a free prologue.
The launch price is $9.99/£8.50/€9.99, and a 20% discount promotion is running until May 13. Along with the launch, a free standalone prologue, ‘Hell is Empty, Demons Are Playing Apokerlypse’, is also available to play on Steam.
A combination of poker and roguelike, a card battle anyone can easily enjoy
Apocalypse combines deck-building roguelike elements with the basic goal of poker, ‘to run out of cards.’ It is characterized by generating powerful chain reactions every time and is designed to be easily enjoyed without any barrier to entry, even for those who know absolutely nothing about poker rules.
The game begins in a post-apocalyptic tavern. Players take on the role of a Cardshark, fighting with cards as their weapon to compete against opponents with diverse builds and challenge for the top spot. With poker combinations like Pair, Straight, and Full House combined with a roguelike progression structure, players can enjoy a fresh gameplay experience with different strategies and probabilities every time.
A deep system for creating various builds and strategies
The game features five unique heroes, each with a different play style and skill set. Players can create various builds using over 70 skills and affixes, 400 Demon Chips, and 13 card enchantments.
In addition, the deck management system, which allows for purchasing, removing, and transforming cards, is designed so that player choices significantly influence the flow of the game. These elements provide both a high degree of freedom and the fun of replayability.
Asynchronous PvP and real-time multiplayer, a multiplayer structure unprecedented in the genre
In single-player mode, you complete a new build every time and face increasingly stronger opponents. As your rank rises, strategic responses become more important.
In multiplayer, you can asynchronously challenge actual builds created by players worldwide or jump into 2-3 player PvP online multiplayer matches. In particular, special elements such as ‘Destiny Cards’ and ‘Party Fists’ significantly change the flow of the game and require instantaneous strategic adjustments.
It is very rare to see a roguelike deckbuilder genre that fully incorporates multiplayer like this. Overseas media described it as “a title that continues the trend of poker-based roguelikes while taking it to the next level with multiplayer.”
Why is Hell Empty? Experience the worldview first through the free prologue
The free prologue ‘Hell is Empty, Demons Are Playing Apokerlypse’ was released first on April 17. Players take on the role of ‘Satan,’ a servant of Hell, and progress through a story consisting of three chapters.
The game unfolds with a structure in which players challenge the Throne of Hell after battling powerful bosses. In particular, it boasts a high level of difficulty, with the final chapter having a clear rate of less than 10%. The prologue naturally introduces the background of the world and key settings, serving as a transition into the main story.
173 reviews with a 91% positive rating in just four days, a new title from veteran developers at Lilith Games
Apocalypse achieved a ‘Very Positive’ rating just four days after its release, with 91% of its 173 Steam reviews being positive. The international media outlet COGconnected commented, “It offers a fresh perspective on the roguelike card genre through a combination of strategy, variety, and competitive elements.”
Breaker Games is a Chinese indie game studio founded in January 2023, and its core members come from Lilith Games, famous for the ‘Dota Legend’ and ‘AFK Arena’ series. Studio founder Wilson gained attention in 2022 when his indie game ‘Project Zero’ ranked high on the Steam list of popular new releases.
Apocalypse is a new title based on the ‘Apocalypse Party’ universe, which shares a worldview with this work, and is expected to provide new enjoyment to fans of the previous game as well.
