Gamescom sensation that moved visitors to tears… ‘The Journey Home’ demo revealed

    By Editorial Team2026년 09월 02일4 Mins Read
    • A new game from a Belgian husband-and-wife development team combining the tension of ‘Inside’ and the emotion of ‘Journey’
    • A side-scrolling adventure written by a USA Today bestselling author.
    • An emotional eye-catching piece that transcends time and space and poses questions about life and death

Belgian indie developer Joey’s Entertainment unveiled a free Steam demo of the meditative side-scrolling adventure ‘The Journey Home’ at Gamescom 2026 Future Game Show.

This demo, released along with a new gameplay trailer, captures the game’s impressive world and emotional narrative, and development is continuing with a target release date of Q4 2026 for PC (Steam).

A journey that traverses time and space, retracing life and death

‘The Journey Home’ is an adventure game that explores questions about life and death, set in a surreal world that transcends the boundaries of time and space.

Players traverse various timelines, including the protagonist’s childhood, and immerse themselves in surreal puzzles. Amidst a constantly changing environment, the ‘Pulse’ system—a core mechanism that enables close interaction with the surroundings without dialogue—becomes the player’s sole guidepost.

It also includes ‘Hitch a Ride’ elements, where you directly control various creatures such as giant fireflies, jellyfish, birds, and 1950s-style flying cars. The game is characterized by a design that minimizes cutscenes and loading screens, employing a custom camera system and a minimal UI to allow for immersion in the journey.

A meditative adventure combining the sensibilities of ‘Inside’ and ‘Journey’

The developer introduces ‘The Journey Home’ as a work inspired by the tense environmental storytelling of ‘Inside’ and the emotional resonance of ‘Journey’.

The work combines aesthetic environmental design, minimal gameplay, and cinematic direction to deliver a philosophical message about life and death. Currently, on the global PC platform Steam, it is being recognized for its originality through tags such as ‘atmospheric’, ’emotional’, ‘philosophical’, and ‘cinematic’.

Previously, ‘The Journey Home’ showcased a demo version at Gamescom 2025. It garnered attention when stories from the developer and on-site staff revealed that the game’s touching atmosphere and themes left a deep impression on visitors, with some even shedding tears.

A story created by a game developer and a bestselling author, a married couple

Following its reveal at last year’s Gamescom demonstration, the release of this Steam demo allows general users to experience the game firsthand.

The unrivaled aura and emotional resonance proven at Gamescom are now put to the test by players worldwide through the demo version. ‘The Journey Home,’ which promises to deliver a poignant emotional experience with poetic direction, is set to fully unveil itself with its official release on Steam in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The buzz generated by the phrase “the game that made the audience cry”

Although ‘The Journey Home’ has not yet been officially released, the buzz surrounding it since the Gamescom 2025 demonstration is reflected in the news of this demo reveal.

Overseas gaming media outlet GamesRadar+ summarized the announcements from Gamescom 2026 Future Game Show and introduced ‘The Journey Home’ as an atmospheric platformer written by bestselling author Sophie Ray Robbins, and several game press release distributors also covered the news of the demo release under the title “The game that made visitors cry at Gamescom.”

Although it is still in the early stages with a small wishlist, a key point to watch is whether the emotional reaction during the previous demonstration can translate into a tangible response from a wider user base through this demo.

‘The Journey Home’ is a work by a husband-and-wife duo that combines the technical realm of game design with the artistic sensibility of literary storytelling, presenting a new direction for the future of indie games.

The industry is focusing its attention on how much the explosive emotional response from users witnessed at the last Gamescom can be expanded to resonate with a wider user base through this free demo version, and furthermore, what meaningful results this beautiful challenge will yield in the market ahead of the official launch in the fourth quarter of this year.
