- The final stand over a single castle gate… A combination of tower defense and survivor action
- A roguelite defense battle featuring 4 heroes, 149 skills, and dozens of artifacts.
Heroes can fall. Units can be annihilated. Meticulously crafted strategies can crumble amidst fear and chaos. But there is one thing that must be defended at all costs: the city gates.
Publisher Yogscast Games, a Star Awards nominee, and co-publishing partner Gamersky Games officially released the dark fantasy action strategy game ‘The Gate Must Stand’ on PC Steam on June 18.
The game is an action roguelite that combines elements of tower defense and survivors-like genres, and immediately after its release, it received a ‘mostly positive’ rating on Steam with 78% positive reviews based on 50 reviews.
Massive battlefields and heavy impact… the ceaselessly escalating pressure of dark fantasy
‘The Gate Must Stand’ is a title that combines large-scale battles with a heavy sense of impact, set against a dark and gloomy fantasy world. Players take on the role of a warrior defending the last line of defense of the Kingdom of Bellak, facing off against endless waves of monsters.
Waves of enemies filling the screen and the massive battlefield create a constant sense of pressure. As the battle drags on, the situation becomes increasingly desperate, and the player must mobilize all resources to prevent the approaching catastrophe.
The game features a growth structure similar to the Survivors genre, but places greater emphasis on strategic judgment in maintaining the defensive line rather than simply becoming stronger.
Instead of indiscriminate expansion, it is important to efficiently select necessary upgrades at the appropriate time, requiring simultaneous hero control and garrison management. Due to the relentless waves of enemies rushing toward the gates, movement paths, positioning, and battle timing act as key factors determining victory or defeat.
Tower defense that jumps in directly rather than commanding from the rear
Simon Byron, Managing Director at Yogscast Games, introduced the game by saying, “’The Gate Must Stand’ is a masterpiece that brilliantly captures a heroic tale blooming amidst despair. You must calmly reorganize your defenses only to race across the battlefield to repair a front line that collapses in an instant. It is chaotic and full of tension, but at the same time, it provides great satisfaction.”
Instead of the traditional tower defense style of placing and managing towers from a distance, players directly control a warrior defending the city gates. In the besieged city, the sole objective is to hold out until the very end to prevent the gates from collapsing.
To achieve this, you must recruit allies, acquire new abilities, and combine various skills and artifacts to face increasingly powerful waves of enemies and massive boss battles. Your ever-changing choices and growth paths determine the fate of the defense line.
4 Heroes and 149 Skills… The Fun of Rich Build Combinations
The official release version includes 4 heroes with different combat styles and 149 hero skills. In addition, 19 basic followers, 38 ultimate evolution forms, and 150 follower skills are added, allowing for the creation of various combinations.
The scale of the content is also substantial. It features a total of 3 stages, 6 maps, 5 difficulty levels, 13 types of bosses, and 10 types of elite enemies, while 46 advanced skill options and 53 relics create new synergies every time.
Reactions from overseas media regarding the game are positive. COGconnected commented, “A new battlefield has opened for dark fantasy fans,” adding that “it combines tower defense with fast-paced survivor action, encouraging players to go beyond simply making plans and actively intervene in the battlefield.”
Yogscast Games’ third collaboration, growing with a small development team
‘The Gate Must Stand’ is the third co-published title from Yogscast Games and Gamersky Games. The two companies have once again joined forces following the success of ‘Border Pioneer’ and ‘Stray Path’, released last year. The actual development was handled by China’s Senmu Studio.
Founded in 2017, Yogscast Games is well known for collaborating with small but original indie development teams. It has expanded its presence in the indie game market by publishing titles such as ‘PlateUp!’, which has surpassed 2 million cumulative sales, and ‘Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers’, which generated over $1 million in revenue in its first month of release.
The choice to take up a sword and charge into the front lines instead of building towers and watching. ‘The Gate Must Stand’ overturns the familiar tower defense formula to create a fierce survival drama surrounding a single castle gate. Many dark fantasy fans are focusing their attention on the story of the final resistance that players will write in a battlefield where despair and chaos ceaselessly surge.
