Gunfire of the Mexican Revolution and Supernatural Horror, ‘Dark Adelita’ Released on Steam

    By Editorial Team2026년 05월 06일5 Mins Read
    • A fast-paced side-scrolling shooter set against the backdrop of Mexican folk legends and history
    • The tension of one-shot kills, folk bosses like La Llorona, and stages set in the 32 states of Mexico.

In the place where the flames of the Mexican Revolution were dying out, something darker awakened. ‘Dark Adelita,’ a side-scrolling shooter co-developed by Mexican indie studio Brain-dead Rabbit Games and publisher indie.io, was released on Steam on May 5.

The launch price is $5.99, with a 20% launch discount currently applied. Based on Mexican history, folk legends, and the story of the revolutionary female warrior ‘Adelita,’ this game is a hardcore side-scrolling shooter that combines sophisticated platforming with extreme tension where a single bullet results in instant death.

A supernatural threat rising from the embers of revolution

Mexico, where the flames of revolution were dying out after decades of brutal war. However, a new darkness spreads over the ruins. Those seized by an unknown dark force rise up with guns, fierce eagles flap their wings in the sky, and beings from Mexican legend come back to life on the ground. Standing against all of this is only one woman: Adelita Angela.

The player controls the protagonist, Angela, as she navigates a bullet-riddled battlefield. Using a bolt-action rifle as her primary weapon, she can utilize a variety of firearms including shotguns, machine guns, and high-powered revolvers, while the cross serves as a defensive measure to dodge bullets. However, Angela is taken down by a single bullet. Quick judgment and precise movement are everything for survival.

Mexico’s History and Sentiments Revived Through Pixel Art

Dark Adelita captures a unique atmosphere with a smoothly refined pixel art style. The ochre landscapes of the Mexican Revolution, the eerie colors of folk legends, and dust scattering with the sound of gunshots combine to complete this distinctive mood.

Each stage features a unique background inspired by real Mexican states, going beyond mere scenery to embody the region’s culture and history within the game space.

The sound design also supports this atmosphere. Music and sound effects capturing the mood of revolutionary Mexico heighten the urgency of the battles amidst the tension of gunfights, while heavier staging upon entering boss fights maximizes the sense of folk horror.

From La Llorona to Mexico’s 32 states… Shaping culture into games

In Dark Adelita, Mexican culture is not merely a decorative element for the background. The game itself was designed from the outset to showcase the unique aspects of Mexico. Each stage reflects the actual landscapes and history of Mexico’s states, and the enemies and bosses that appear are beings from the folk legends of those regions.

The boss battles that conclude each level are confrontations against powerful beings rooted in Hispanic folklore. A prime example is ‘La Llorona,’ a vengeful wanderer weeping over the loss of her child.

Both the game’s protagonist and the title itself are rooted in history. ‘Adelita’ is a term referring to female warriors who fought on the front lines or provided support during the Mexican Revolution, and their story is told through the folk song ‘Corridor’.

Tension and uniqueness praised, difficulty mixed… Community reactions divided

Immediately after its release, the community has been flooded with diverse reactions regarding the game’s concept and quality. Users particularly cite the “tension created by the one-shot kill mechanic” and the “balance between shooting and platforming” as key strengths. The design, which encourages repeated challenges despite the short playtime, is also being praised as impressive.

Furthermore, the way Mexican history and folk legends are incorporated into the gameplay is also receiving favorable reviews. Some users have commented that it feels “like experiencing the actual culture rather than just a simple backdrop,” noting that the game successfully captures the unique sentiment of Latin America. The pixel art and sound design are also frequently cited as elements that enhance the immersive atmosphere.

On the other hand, opinions regarding the high difficulty are somewhat mixed. Users who prefer hardcore gameplay evaluate it positively, calling it a “design that stimulates the desire for a challenge,” while some expressed disappointment regarding the high initial entry barrier and the checkpoint configuration.

A remote studio created by three Mexican friends united to promote their national culture

Brain-dead Rabbit Games is a remote-based indie studio formed by three friends from across Mexico. Their core goal is to introduce the unique culture of their homeland, Mexico, to the world. Dark Adelita is their second title, a further development of the shooter system established in their previous work, Damikira.

Dark Atellita, produced in partnership with publisher indie.io, is a notable work as an example of a small studio placing its own culture at the center of its content and taking on the global market head-on, as well as in terms of expanding the base of the Latin American indie game scene.
