The Battle of 3,500 Demos: Which Indies are Dominating the First Steam Next Fest of 2026?

    By Jaechung Lim2026년 03월 02일Updated:2026년 03월 15일8 Mins Read

From million-wishlist milestones to the “AI Slop” controversy, the first Steam Next Fest of 2026 (running from February 23 to March 2 PT) has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. With over 3,500 free demos flooding the platform, this Valve-hosted festival has become the ultimate proving ground for the year’s most anticipated indie titles.

The biggest hit is “Windrose,” which surpassed 1 million wishlists.

The undisputed star of the show is Windrose, an open-world pirate survival game developed by the Windrose Crew. Almost immediately after its demo launched, it climbed to the #1 spot on the Steam Demo charts, peaking at over 22,000 concurrent players.

    • The Milestone: The game officially surpassed 1 million wishlists during the event, outperforming several high-budget AAA projects.
    • The Hype: The demo offers 4–6 hours of gameplay, featuring soulslike boss battles and a 4-player co-op mode.
    • Developer Stance: Despite the massive demand, the team remains cautious. “We will announce a release date only when the quality is at a level we are confident in,” the developers stated.

The Return of ZA/UM, ‘Zero Parades: For Dead Spies’

The creators behind the legendary Disco Elysium have returned with Zero Parades: For Dead Spies. This spy-themed RPG stays true to the ZA/UM formula:

    • Text-Driven: A deep focus on dialogue, deduction, and internal conflict over traditional combat.
    • Aesthetic: The game retains the painterly, melancholic visual style that defined their previous work.
    • Expectation: It remains one of the most intellectually stimulating demos of the fest, proving that the demand for high-density narrative is stronger than ever.

Notable Demos, Key Picks by Genre

Action/Metroidvania – Fallen Tear: The Ascension

Developed by Filipino indie studio Winter Crew and published by CMD Studios, Fallen Tear: The Ascension is a story-driven Metroidvania that combines hand-drawn art and souls-lite combat.

This Next Fest demo adds new areas, companion characters, and boss challenges. The Steam Early Access release, scheduled for March 17th, will include 10 areas, the full story Act 1, and six main bosses.

One Steam community user raved, “The combat, bosses, and voice acting are all amazing. This game absolutely has to come out.”

    Cyberpunk 2D Platformer – Replaced

Replaced, a 2.5D action platformer set in a cyberpunk universe, is another highly anticipated title from Next Fest.

Featuring sleek pixel art and cinematic presentation, it prioritizes precise melee combat and fluid controls. Players become AI-powered beings trapped in human bodies, exploring a dystopian city and grappling with questions of identity and survival.

It is considered one of the “most stylish indie games to watch” thanks to its gorgeous dot graphics and heavy atmosphere.

    Genre Picks: The Must-Play List

    • ‘Fallen Tear: The Ascension’ (Action/Metroidvania): A hand-drawn epic from the Philippines. Its Early Access (March 17) will feature 10 massive regions and soulslite combat.
    • ‘REPLACED’ (Cyberpunk Platformer): Perhaps the most stylish game of the fest. Its 2.5D pixel art and cinematic lighting are redefining what “indie” looks like.
    • ‘Outbound’ (Cozy Simulation): A viral hit involving a customizable camper van journey through the wilderness. It is currently one of the most-played demos among “cozy” gamers.
    • ‘Coffee Talk Tokyo’ & ‘inKONBINI’: These Japanese-set narrative sims focus on the beauty of daily life—brewing coffee for ghosts and running a 90s convenience store. Both are officially supported with Korean and English localization.
DeckLand – A combination of Yut Nori and deck building

[Related article: “Deckland,” a highly anticipated K-indie film steeped in Eastern mythology, combines constellation exploration and monster slaying.]

Developed by Korean indie developer Jellysnow and published by CFK, Deckland garnered attention for its unique concept at the event. Combining the traditional board game “Yut Nori” with a deck-building rogue-lite structure, the game tells a martial arts epic set in an ancient Korean dynasty. Its world is characterized by its inspiration from oral traditions and folktales.

It will be released on Steam Early Access on March 23rd, and will later expand to console platforms such as Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PS5.

    Solateria – A hand-drawn Metroidvania

Developed by Studio Dudal and published by Shinsegae I&C, 2D action Metroidvania Solateria boasts a hand-drawn art style.

Set in a world on the verge of destruction, the player embarks on a journey to find the “First Fire.” The immersive combat experience is enhanced by parrying, the “Pyron Action” combo, and time-lapse effects. Secret areas hidden throughout the map and various sub-routes add to the fun of exploration.

Stardust: Wish of Witch – Pixel art tactical RPG

[Related article: A promise that began at Nonsan Training Center, Knives Studio’s challenge to become a leading SRPG company]

Stardust: Stars and the Witch is a turn-based strategy RPG that reinterprets the tactical feel of classic SRPGs with pixel art.

This game, which combines a traditional grid-based battle system with a modern twist, is gaining attention as a continuation of the Korean SRPG lineage. With its emotional pixelated visuals and robust strategic elements, it’s conquering the wish lists of genre fans.

    The “AI Slop” Controversy

Despite the excitement, a shadow looms over the festival. With 3,500+ demos, critics and players have pointed out a surge of low-quality “AI Slop”—games developed primarily with generative AI that lack human polish.

“AI slop is clogging the pipes, making it harder for genuine small teams to get noticed,” noted industry outlets like Kotaku and Finger Guns.

As Steam’s algorithm tends to favor games that already have traction, the responsibility has fallen on players to manually dig through the “slop” to find handcrafted gems.

    Conclusion: Beyond the Demo

Steam Next Fest is more than just a free trial period; it is the lifeblood of the indie ecosystem. For many of these studios, a single wishlist or a positive review is the difference between a successful launch and falling into obscurity. As the event wraps up on March 3rd (KST), Valve will release a “Wrap-Up” page summarizing the most-played titles.
