- Co-developed by Deconstructim and Selkie Harbor, launching on Steam on October 27
- Emotion-driven narrative action presented by the developers of ‘The Red Strings Club’
Global game publisher Devolver Digital announced on the 27th (local time) that it has officially released the narrative action game ‘Virtue and a Sledgehammer’, co-developed by Deconstructeam and Selkie Harbour, on the PC platform Steam.
‘Virtue and a Sledgehammer’ is a profound, narrative-driven work that explores moral dilemmas and the boundaries of violence . Set in a fictional world where values have collapsed, the player faces numerous choices that test their beliefs while holding a heavy, large sledgehammer.
In particular, it garnered anticipation even before its release due to the participation of Deconstruct Team, who were recognized for their unrivaled narrative direction skills in ‘The Red Strings Club’ and ‘Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood’. It is praised for creating a bizarre yet captivating atmosphere through the combination of distinctive, stylish pixel art and a dreamy soundtrack, while highlighting the experimental nature unique to indie games .
A hometown turned into machines and destruction… Finding the meaning of family amidst it all
The protagonist finally returns to their hometown after a long absence. However, the warm neighbors from their memories are nowhere to be found, and their place is filled with bizarre digital replicas possessing mechanical bodies.
These machine residents plead that they simply want to live a peaceful life, but the protagonist grabs a giant sledgehammer and begins mercilessly demolishing the stone walls, buildings, the entire village, and the machine residents.
The process of advancing deep into the village while destroying all sorts of structures blocking the path does not remain merely a superficial act of destruction. Amidst the rubble of the village crumbling mercilessly, the protagonist confronts fragments of his forgotten past and constantly revisits the complex relationship with his estranged family.
In fact, the official Steam store page describes this work as a game that deeply explores the values of family and tradition, as well as the complex human emotions of becoming a complete stranger in the very space where one grew up .
Beyond simple action, the moral boundary between destruction and catharsis
The act of wielding a sledgehammer to destroy one’s hometown is a core narrative device that runs through the game’s story. According to the description on the Steam store page, text-based interactive fiction sequences organically intersect as the player continues their exploration.
Through this, the fears and repressed desires buried deep within the protagonist’s heart, as well as the complex emotional entanglements among family members, gradually come to the surface.
The game constantly poses philosophical questions about whether acts of violent destruction will lead to the true resolution (catharsis) of festering emotions, or whether they will instead deepen indelible wounds.
The development team meticulously structured the progression so that players could simultaneously experience the psychological turmoil of the protagonist and the weight of the narrative amidst the satisfying tactile sensation of mindlessly destroying buildings and machine inhabitants.
Consequently, the destruction mechanism presented in ‘Virtue and a Sledgehammer’ is not merely a system for simple action thrills or breaking through obstacles. It functions as a unique tool for introspection and a narrative device through which the protagonist confronts and processes his scarred past, adding depth to the work.
It can be rough and emotionally overwhelming, but it is a game about love.
Jordi de Paco, Creative Director of the Deconstruct team, used the unconventional expression “dangerous game” to describe this new title.
The explanation is that players may feel a significant emotional burden while playing because the game directly deals with family relationships—the most complex area of human interaction—as well as the anger and raw trauma that have long accumulated deep within them.
Nevertheless, he emphasized, “But above all, this work is a game about ‘love’,” and explained the development intent, stating, “Our development team’s ultimate goal is to make players think deeply and directly experience a variety of emotions through the process, even if they feel a certain degree of psychological discomfort while playing the game.”
Going beyond simple stress-relieving action, ‘Virtue and a Sledgehammer’ explores fundamental human wounds and the meaning of family through the destructive device of a sledgehammer, standing out as a work that showcases the sharp experimental spirit characteristic of indie games.
This new title, which leaves a deep impression and poses philosophical questions to players, is available for purchase and download via the Steam store page.
