- Deep-sea survival set against the backdrop of Saturn’s moon Enceladus… Scheduled for release in 2026
- Tension maximized by fully destructible terrain and a procedural generation system
- – Participation in Steam Scrim V, offering a free demo version for a limited time until November 2nd
Indie developer Tech Turtles announced that the demo version of their deep-sea survival exploration roguelike ‘The Subminer’ will be participating in ‘Steam Scream V’, and following the previous Steam Next Fest, they will be offering a free trial version at this horror-themed event to attract users in earnest.
‘The Subminer’ is a deep-sea mining exploration survival game set beneath the icy crust of the alien planet Enceladus. Players must control their own submarine to break through destructible seabed terrain and mine valuable resources.
Based on a roguelike system where the structure changes every time, the game features tense gameplay where you must meticulously manage oxygen, fuel, power, and collected resources once the dive begins.
In particular, the claustrophobia caused by the dark seabed where no light reaches, combined with the unidentified monsters lurking in the deep sea, creates a uniquely eerie horror atmosphere. The judgment and experience required to decide when to dive deeper and when to stop mining and return are considered key elements of fun.
Mining Survival Digging into the Sea Beneath the Ice of Enceladus
The game is set on Saturn’s moon Enceladus, in the unknown deep sea beneath its icy crust. Players must continue their exploration by carving out a path through destructible seabed terrain while keeping an eye on dangers lurking all around. In particular, as you descend deeper into the deep sea, visibility is obscured and the environment becomes harsh, causing the difficulty of survival to rise rapidly.
The underwater infrastructure is implemented using a procedural generation method where the structure changes every time, and consists of a total of three depth levels. Each depth layer features unique secrets, traps, and distinctive monsters, delivering a sense of tension.
In addition, you can upgrade your equipment with resources acquired after completing each exploration to challenge deeper parts of the ocean. You must carefully manage limited underwater resources, and a single lapse in judgment can lead to immediate, permanent death, creating a highly immersive experience.
Chain-reaction terrain and rescue missions, base reconstruction
The core system touted by the developer is the ‘completely destructible underwater terrain.’ While mining and destroying the terrain may trigger unexpected chain reactions that open new passages, it can also conversely trigger hidden dangers, requiring a cautious approach.
In addition to the fun of exploration with a high-risk, high-return structure, the introduction of permanent growth elements that enhance the value of replayability is also a notable feature.
Beyond simple survival, the game incorporates building elements for reconstructing a surface base. Players must rescue isolated NPCs during exploration, complete side quests, and rebuild the collapsed base. However, powerful bosses, deadly traps, and creatures contaminated by radiation lurk in the darkness, threatening the path toward rebuilding the base.
According to the lore revealed on the Steam store page, the game’s narrative begins with a massive explosion at the Enceladus Research Base. In an extreme situation where all contact with the outside world is completely cut off, the player takes on the role of a deep-sea prototype bio-droid and engages in a desperate struggle for humanity’s last hope.
Horror direction set against the backdrop of a dark and suffocating deep sea
The game’s official catchphrase is “Live. Dive. Repeat.” The publisher promoted deep-sea exploration that maximizes claustrophobia and extreme survival as the core identity of the title.
Although specific graphic technology and audio specifications remain shrouded in mystery, the trailers and promotional materials released so far depict the pitch-black darkness of the ocean floor and the sudden appearance of monstrous creatures attacking from within, foreshadowing a unique sense of overwhelming realism and horror.
The first work by Turkish indie studio Tech Turtles
Tech Turtles is an independent game studio based in Turkey. Two developers who worked together on a university graduation project left the mobile game industry after feeling their passion for development waning, and were subsequently joined by two like-minded game artists to form the team. ‘The Subminer’ is their first work.
Publishing was handled by Yogscast Games, headquartered in Bristol, UK.
Participating in Steam Scrim V following Steam Next Fest
‘The Subminer’ was first unveiled to global gamers last May with the opening of its Steam store page and first trailer.
Since then, it has garnered attention from major international gaming media outlets such as PCGamesN and WorthPlaying, and has been raising expectations by releasing an additional new trailer at the ’28 Games Later’ showcase hosted by Insider Gaming.
The ‘Steam Scream V’ event, where you can experience this demo version, runs until November 2nd. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether demo play will continue after the event ends.
Users who want to get a taste of deep-sea horror and roguelike tension can download a free demo via the Steam store page and be the first to receive news about future releases and updates by adding it to their wishlist.
