Martial Arts RPG ‘The Scroll of Taiwu’, Played by 3.4 Million in China, Launches Globally After 8 Years

    By Editorial Team2026년 06월 02일5 Mins Read
    • A Chinese indie RPG that started as an RPG Maker demo, went through 8 years of early access, and gathered 3.4 million players
    • 15 regional storylines, enhanced NPC AI, completely revamped visuals and UI… Full-scale entry into the global market with English support

A vast martial arts world experienced by over 3.4 million people in China alone. However, it remained a relatively unfamiliar name in the global market. After approximately eight years of early access, this Chinese indie RPG is finally making its global debut in its complete form, complete with English support.

The Scroll of Taiwu: Beyond the Dome, a Chinese mythology-based martial arts open-world sandbox RPG developed by ConchShip Games, an indie developer from Yunnan, China, will be officially released as V1.0 on Steam on June 17.

This 1.0 version includes major updates such as the series’ first official English support, 15 regional storylines, enhanced NPC AI, revamped visuals and lighting, UI improvements, and a new onboarding system.

A martial arts world alive and breathing like an ink painting… Completely revamped visuals and worldview

The biggest change between Early Access and Version 1.0 is the significant improvement in visual quality. An improved lighting system, newly refined visuals, and a UI overhaul have been implemented, along with various convenience and gameplay improvements requested by the community during the long Early Access period.

The game is set in ‘Shenzhou,’ a world from ancient Chinese mythology. The visuals, combining ink-wash style pixel art with traditional Chinese aesthetics, embody the distinctive atmosphere of martial arts novels and the Jianghu through a unique visual language. Fifteen regions, each with its own distinct culture, environment, and legends, are connected like a single living world.

The sound design also enhances the immersion of the world. Amidst the melodies of traditional Chinese instruments, duels, training, journeys, and cultivation unfold; within a world that constantly changes its appearance through process generation, players face different relationships, conflicts, training, and duels each time, writing their own narrative of the Jianghu.

From thousands of martial arts techniques to generational succession… A sandbox RPG that transcends genre boundaries

The most significant feature of Taeohwegwon is its overwhelming degree of freedom. Players become the heir to the mysterious ‘Taiu’ clan and embark on a journey to confront an ancient catastrophe, but the course of the journey depends entirely on the player’s choices.

You can train in thousands of martial arts by moving between various martial arts schools, build and expand villages, and craft weapons, medicinal herbs, and equipment. A system is also in place to form a family and pass on knowledge and skills to your children.

All NPCs in the world lead independent lives. They age, form relationships, fall ill, and react dynamically to the player’s actions. Combined with a roguelike progression structure, settlement management, a crafting system, life simulation elements, and even unique content like cricket battles, this creates a distinctive sandbox world that is difficult to define as a single genre.

From RPG Maker Demo to 3.4 Million Players… The Completion of the Chinese Indie Legend

ConchShip Games started as a small community project. Founder Qie Zi gathered an early fanbase through an RPG Maker-based demo and later released an early access version in 2018. Although it was a small team with limited coding experience during the early stages of development, they have established a unique presence in the Chinese indie game market through years of consistent updates and expansion.

As a result of these efforts, Taeohoewon has grown into a representative example of an indie RPG, securing over 3.4 million players in China alone. The development team introduced the release of V1.0 as the “culmination of a project that has spanned years,” stating that they are finally able to share their full vision with users worldwide, including English-speaking players.

Interest from international media is also continuing. RPG Site reported, “After more than seven years of early access, the full edition is finally being released with English support,” while Noisy Pixel introduced it by stating, “A vast open-world sandbox RPG inspired by Chinese mythology and martial arts novels is finally opening its doors to global players.”

From Chinese mythology and martial arts to procedurally generated sandboxes, generational succession, and life simulation, ‘Taeohwegwon’ is more than just a simple martial arts RPG; it is an ambitious project aiming to realize a living world of the Jianghu. With this unique indie RPG, refined over a long period in China, now featuring its first-ever English support, attention is focused on whether it can establish itself as the new standard for the martial arts experience in the global market.
