Every March, before the spring chill truly leaves Boston, gamers from around the world pack their bags for the Northeast. This year, however, the atmosphere at PAX East 2026 feels markedly different. The era of sprawling, million-dollar AAA megabooths is giving way to a new age where the quiet glow of indie monitors takes center stage.

A Changing Landscape: From Blockbusters to Brainstorms
Taking place from March 26 to 29, PAX East 2026 occupies the Thomas M. Menino Convention & Exhibition Center. While industry staples like Nintendo, Blumhouse Games, Double Fine, and NIS America maintain a presence, the absence of “Big Three” titans like Sony or Microsoft is palpable.
“The trade show landscape hasn’t quite been the same since the pandemic,” noted one industry veteran on the floor. “The days of Rockstar or Valve dominating every corner are over. But in their place, we’re seeing a raw, creative energy that only indies can provide.”

The PAX Rising Showcase: The Best of the Best
The heart of the convention this year is the PAX Rising Showcase, a curated space specifically for small developers to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the giants. Out of hundreds of submissions, only a handful were chosen based on gameplay, fun, and sheer creativity.
■ ShantyTown
ShantyTown: Created by solo developer Erik Rempen, this cozy, diorama-style city builder has become a viral hit. With over 30,000 demo players during February’s Steam Next Fest, the game is set to launch on April 16.
■ Super Blowfish Castle
Super Blowfish Castle: A “healing chaos” physics puzzler from T-LANDER STUDIOS. Using just a single button, players must navigate a pufferfish through 100 challenging levels. Despite its cute visuals, the “spicy” difficulty has resulted in some of the longest lines at the show.
■ Project Lexa

Project Lexa: Developed by Ward Games, this sci-fi adventure focuses on deciphering alien languages. Its unique focus on linguistics and crew relationships has made it a standout for players seeking a more intellectual challenge.
Highlights for the most anticipated indie titles ‘Busby 4D’ and ‘Demon Tides’
The works that generated the most buzz among indie fans at PAX East 2026 were ‘Bubsy 4D’ and ‘Demon Tides’.
Indie studio Fabraz is currently the talk of the town. Their upcoming title, Bubsy 4D—the first 3D entry for the franchise in 30 years—is being hailed as a potential masterpiece. Early impressions suggest it may even surpass its predecessor, Demon Tides, which launched last month to “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews and just received a massive 1.1 Update adding New Game Plus and Randomizer modes.
Released on Steam on February 19, Demon Tides was priced at $24.99 and was praised as “the best 3D platformer game since Super Mario Odyssey,” receiving positive reviews for its vibrant art style, capturing the vibe of 2000s video games, dynamic soundtrack, and free movement system.
Buoyed by the overwhelmingly positive response immediately after launch, the 1.1 update, which adds New Game Plus mode and Randomization mode, was also recently released.
Global Reach: Gravity’s 12-Title Campaign
South Korean publisher Gravity is celebrating its fourth consecutive year at PAX with its largest lineup to date. Spearheaded by Park Jin-on, the team is showcasing 12 indie titles, including the guild management sim Galvatein and the Soulslike boss rush LIGHT ODYSSEY. To celebrate the event, Gravity has launched a 40% publisher sale on Steam for its existing titles.

As the industry continues to evolve, PAX East 2026 has proven that as long as there are passionate creators like those at Fabraz or teams willing to cross the Pacific like Gravity, the “Spring of Indies” in Boston will remain the most exciting season in gaming.
