- The first work by Selkies Interactive, founded by game design students in Berlin
- A narrative adventure that tracks the truth behind a missing persons case, moving back and forth between the past and the present.
Echoes of Mora, the debut title from Berlin-based indie studio Selkies Interactive, was officially released on PC via Steam on September 21. A VR-supported version is scheduled to be added later.
‘Echoes of Mora’ is a first-person narrative adventure set in the ruins of a flooded village, telling the story of a girl named Mora searching for her missing brother. The developers state that the game was inspired by titles such as ‘What Remains of Edith Finch’, ‘The Vanishing of Ethan Carter’, and ‘Life Is Strange’.
The game is characterized by realistic and lyrical visuals instead of cartoon-style graphics. It creates a quiet yet poignant atmosphere by combining gentle sound design with the scenery of an abandoned village submerged beneath the water.
The story of a cursed lake and two sisters who travel through time
The game’s story begins as Mora sets out to find traces of her brother, who went missing near a cursed purple lake. A few days later, all that remains are the remnants of a submerged village.
Players explore flooded streets and quiet houses to find clues to the disappearance case. Throughout the town, time portals called ‘Echoes’ can be found, and by collecting pieces through these portals, players can travel to the past before the flood occurred.
In the village of the past, Mora is the only being capable of recognizing the player. By delivering the clues found to Mora and answering her questions, the player tracks down the whereabouts of the player’s brother together. The ending of the story depends on the choices the player makes.
A peaceful, danger-free exploration of a submerged village
The game proceeds by exploring a flooded village at your own pace using a keyboard and mouse or a controller.
Elements such as time limits or life-threatening battles were excluded, and the focus was on discovering the story by finding hidden places and lost items.
Along with ‘Echo,’ you can also find ‘Traces’ scattered throughout the villagers’ daily lives and fragments of memories surrounding the older brother. As you collect these one by one, you will piece together the stories intertwined with the villagers’ lives and the disappearance case.
The developer explained that the work consists of a short, complete story lasting about 2 to 3 hours.
A new studio formed by game design students in Berlin
Selkies Interactive is a fledgling indie studio founded in 2023 by game design students in Berlin. They aim to create immersive, story-driven worlds, and ‘Echoes of Mora’ is the studio’s first work.
The work was developed through HTW Berlin’s game incubator program and supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.
The development team explained that they wanted to focus on discovery and wonder rather than the survival pressure typically found in underwater games. In particular, inspired by their own experiences with claustrophobia and aquaphobia, they implemented an underwater exploration experience that prioritizes immersion over tension by excluding stressful elements such as oxygen gauges and chase sequences.
An underwater adventure first unveiled at Gamescom and other events
‘Echoes of Mora’ garnered attention even before its official release by unveiling demos and trailers at various events, including the Convergence Game Showcase and Gamescom.
VR specialized media UploadVR positively evaluated the immersive narrative and dreamlike worldview, noting that while underwater movement was not completely smooth during the demonstration, it introduced it as a title worth adding to a wishlist.
However, as of now, immediately after the official release, Steam user reviews have not yet been fully compiled. A free demo is also available on Steam, allowing you to experience the game’s atmosphere and exploration style firsthand before purchasing the full version.
Echoes of Mora is currently available on Steam for PC, and a VR-supported version is scheduled to be added soon. Players who enjoy lyrical storytelling and leisurely exploration should check out Selkies Interactive’s debut title.
