‘Never Wither’, an open-world survival game where you directly possess a creature

    By Editorial Team2026년 08월 31일5 Mins Read
    • Unique ‘Creature Collection’ system that controls creatures by possessing them draws attention.
    • A new title from Chinese developer Geo Seed Games targeting fans of Falworld, V-Rising, and Valheim

Chinese indie game developer Geo Seed Games and publisher Luckycalf have released a new gameplay trailer for the open-world survival crafting game ‘Never Wither’ .

‘Never Wither’ will participate in Steam Next Fest in October 2026 and is scheduled to release a free demo that supports online co-op play starting October 20.

A ‘Possession’ system where visible creatures become my abilities.

The setting of ‘Never Wither’ is the continent of ‘Edda,’ which is being consumed by Corruption. Players become ‘Gardeners’ who collect various fantastic creatures under the protection of the World Tree, purifying them and possessing them to use their abilities.

Each creature possesses different abilities, such as combat, construction, and exploration. It involves transforming into various creatures—ranging from slimes that devour everything around them to lumps of mud that turn into farmland, swift wolf warriors, and stone giants that uproot trees to use as weapons—and utilizing their unique skills.

Players can collect resources to build temples and manage settlements; they can play alone or invite friends to enjoy survival, building, and adventure together. On official servers, players can form clans to compete for territory, while on private servers, it is possible to manage a world with their own rules.

The demo being released this time centers around the game’s first region, ‘Verdant Valley’. This region features 19 types of creatures and 4 types of boss enemies, and players can collect and raise various creature companions.

In addition, you can construct estate facilities and craft equipment and consumables, while also acquiring new abilities by defeating powerful bosses.

Unlike the first playtest held in May 2026, which focused on single-player, this demo supports online multiplayer for the first time. You can explore Eda with friends, tame creatures, build structures, and challenge bosses.

The demo is expected to provide approximately 3 to 5 hours of content, and it appears that players can enjoy it for even longer by exploring every corner of the region or raising their desired creatures. The game supports English and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

A fantasy continent where a colorful ecosystem comes alive

‘Never Wither’ features a fantasy open world composed of diverse terrains ranging from lush river valleys to windswept plateaus, frozen ice fields, and hot volcanic wastelands.

Since different ecosystems and unique biological communities exist in each region, it appears that distinct environmental changes can be experienced whenever moving to a new area.

Another notable element is the way it combines a mysterious setting centered on the World Tree with the dark theme of pollution encroaching upon the world, expressing the contrast between an idyllic fantasy world and a menacing polluted zone.

Geo Seed Game challenging the creature collection genre

‘Never Wither’ was developed by the Chinese developer Geo Seed Games and published by Luckycalf.

The developer previously conducted the first playtest via Steam from May 29 to June 1, 2026. At the time, online multiplayer features were still under development, so the test was conducted in single-player mode.

‘Never Wither’, which has continued development since then, made another appearance by participating in the Steam Showcase at ChinaJoy 2026, China’s largest game show, in August.

The development team introduces the game as one that will appeal to players who have enjoyed titles such as ‘Palworld’, ‘V Rising’, ‘ARK: Survival Evolved’, and ‘Valheim’. This clearly demonstrates the game’s direction of combining elements of creature collection, open-world survival, and action RPG.

    Gradually gaining buzz through playtesting

Since the first playtest of ‘Never Wither’ last May, several overseas game media outlets have been showing interest by consistently introducing the game’s new systems and test news.

In particular, unlike existing games that combine creature collection and survival sandboxes, the ‘Possession’ system, which allows players to directly control captured creature companions, was highlighted as a key differentiator. Action RPG-style combat and exploration utilizing the abilities of various creatures were also mentioned as major features.

Some media outlets reported that the first test ran for three days, allowing players to experience the first area for approximately three to five hours. Additionally, details of the test were reported, including the developers’ explanation that the placement of some creatures is not yet in its final form.

As online cooperative play is supported for the first time in this October demo, it is expected to serve as an opportunity to build up community feedback based on actual gameplay experiences.
