- Revealed at Gamescom Future Game Show… Scheduled for release on Steam Early Access
- A new cooperative horror game where up to 4 players gather resources and explore a factory together
- Expanding the world of ‘Poppy Playtime’ where survival comes through proximity voice chat and teamwork
Mob Entertainment, the developer of the mascot horror franchise ‘Poppy Playtime’, unveiled a new cooperative survival horror game, ‘Escape From Playtime’, at the Gamescom 2026 Future Game Show.
‘Escape From Playtime’ was first revealed on August 26, 2026, and its Steam page is currently open. The exact release date is not yet known, and the service is scheduled to launch via Steam Early Access in the future.
Previously known by the codename ‘Experiment 82626,’ this title sparked curiosity among fans with the surprise release of only a teaser video and no details. This veiled new title has now confirmed its official name at Gamescom and unveiled specific gameplay information for the first time, officially beginning preparations for its launch.
Become a Smiling Critter and escape the Playtime Factory
‘Escape From Playtime’ is a 1- to 4-player cooperative survival horror game set deep inside the abandoned Playtime Co. factory.
Players will explore the interior of a factory as characters from the ‘Smiling Critters’ toy lineup, which was first introduced in ‘Poppy Playtime: Chapter 3’. Characterized by their empty eyes and grotesquely wide-laughing mouths, these small toys will battle it out as they navigate classrooms, warehouses, laboratories, and the dark corridors connecting them.
The game adopts a ‘procedural generation’ system where the terrain changes randomly in every round. Players deployed to specific areas of the changing facility must find and transport resources and building materials directed by an unidentified ‘voice’. The resources secured in this way are used to construct new homes for toys that have proven their loyalty and value.
However, Playtime’s ‘defective products’ are roaming throughout the factory. Players must secure resources while monitoring enemy movements, deciding whether to split up with teammates to search or move together, and when to abandon the mission and retreat.
The game features deep exploration elements that go beyond simple escape, including puzzle solving, clue gathering, tool utilization, and navigating between hideouts and detours.
Above all, ‘proximity voice chat’ between players acts as a key mechanism determining the success or failure of the game. Since even the slightest breathing sound or scream emanating from the microphone can serve as a fatal clue to lure enemies, players must engage in a suffocating psychological battle from start to finish.
Smiling Critters utilize their small size to hide or crawl into narrow spaces where larger toys cannot fit. On the other hand, because it is difficult to move quickly over large areas, cooperation among team members is highlighted as even more important.
The development team plans to provide eight types of Smiling Critters, one starting zone, and a basic lineup of enemies at the time of Early Access launch. Afterwards, they plan to continuously add new zones, critters, and various features based on community feedback.
A huge toy factory viewed through a small body
‘Escape From Playtime’ maintains the gloomy and bizarre toy factory atmosphere characteristic of the ‘Poppy Playtime’ series, while offering a different perspective through the small size of the Smiling Critters.
As the player views the factory from the eye level of a small critter, the previously familiar space transforms into a much larger and more threatening place. Ordinary structures such as desks, boxes, and passageways become places where the small critter can hide, as well as dangerous obstacles.
The procedurally generated environment is also a key element. With spatial configurations that change every time, you can explore the familiar factory in a new way, and the sudden horror sequences characteristic of the original series will also be continued.
Brother Studios Expanding the ‘Poppy Playtime’ Legend
Mob Entertainment is an independent entertainment studio founded in 2015 by brothers Zach Belanger and Seth Belanger. They develop games and various content with the goal of showcasing stories that break away from conventional practices and unique characters.
The studio’s flagship title is the mascot horror game ‘Poppy Playtime,’ which was first released in 2021. The title has since expanded to various platforms and grown into a global horror franchise with millions of copies sold.
Building on the success of ‘Poppy Playtime’, Mob Entertainment is expanding its worldview into various areas, including new games, original content, publishing, consumer merchandise, and live events.
‘Escape From Playtime’ is also being developed not as a mere sequel continuing the story of the main game, but as a title that expands the existing worldview with new gameplay mechanics.
Numerous foreign media outlets reported it promptly immediately after the announcement.
‘Escape From Playtime’ garnered attention from international game and entertainment media less than a day after being unveiled at the Gamescom 2026 Future Game Show.
PC Gamer highlighted the new cooperative horror game set in Playtime’s factory, where players survive with friends, while the horror media outlet Bloody Disgusting emphasized that this title is not a new chapter of the main ‘Poppy Playtime’ series, but a separate new game that expands the world.
As it is currently in the pre-release stage, quantitative metrics such as user reviews or ratings on Steam do not exist. However, given that the original ‘Poppy Playtime’ is a global franchise with a solid worldwide fanbase, the potential of this new title is considered very high.
In fact, since the surprise announcement of the new title, voices from the global fan community have been calling for the birth of a new cooperative survival horror game.
‘Escape From Playtime’ is a title that breaks away from the exploration and puzzle-centered gameplay of the existing ‘Poppy Playtime’ series and puts cooperative gameplay, where up to four players survive together, at the forefront.
In particular, systems that differentiate it from previous series, such as proximity voice chat, procedurally changing environments, and exploration utilizing the small size of Smiling Critters, are attracting the attention of gamers.
The exact Early Access release date has not yet been announced, and attention is focused on how this new attempt to expand the world of ‘Poppy Playtime’ into the cooperative horror genre will be received through additional information to be released in the future and actual gameplay.
