- New title from Ukrainian developer Painted Black Games scheduled for simultaneous PC and console release
- An epic survival horror with pixel art visuals inspired by Resident Evil and Silent Hill
- Steam and Itch.io demos receive overwhelmingly positive reviews… A pixel art adventure where horror and comfort coexist
A cure developed to solve the global food crisis instead drove humanity to ruin. Civilization collapsed, and cities became ruins. However, the protagonist Catherine cannot stop. This is because she must save her daughter, Ava.
The Road of Dust and Sorrow, a pixel art survival horror game developed by Ukrainian indie studio Painted Black Games and published by UK independent publisher Silver Lining Interactive, unveiled a new trailer at the Future Games Showcase.
The development team has also confirmed the release of PC (Steam), PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 versions. The free demo currently available on Steam and Itch.io is attracting user interest, receiving positive reviews for its atmosphere and story presentation.
‘Cozy Horror’ that adds sentiment to 90s survival horror
Path of Dust and Sorrow was inspired by classic 1990s survival horror games such as ‘Resident Evil’ and ‘Silent Hill’. However, it did not stop at merely emphasizing horror but placed the emotional theme of the bond between parents and children at the center of the narrative.
The development team introduced the game’s identity as “Cozy Horror.” This means they emphasized the unique atmosphere created by contrasting emotions, where the warm sentiment of charming pixel art blends with the unsettling horror evoked by a ruined world.
The player follows the story of Catherine as she travels through a devastated world protecting her daughter, Ava. The journey of this mother and daughter, striving not to lose hope even amidst a collapsed civilization, offers an emotional narrative and immersive experience that goes beyond mere survival.

A world where a cure threatens humanity… A nightmare born of the dream to end famine
The game begins in a world that has collapsed after an experiment to resolve the food shortage failed.
The technology developed to save humanity brought about an unexpected catastrophe, and many people transformed into monsters called ‘Dusters’. Consumed by insatiable hunger, they survive by attacking humans.
Catherine and Ava wander in search of a safer life, but they encounter not only Duster but also another threat: a mysterious cult led by the Preacher. They hold the dangerous belief that humans are “fertile soil” and constantly threaten the mother and daughter’s journey.

Brutal gameplay combining exploration, puzzles, and survival
The game combines exploration, puzzles, and survival elements based on a linear story structure.
Players must explore ruined streets and buildings to secure resources, solve environmental puzzles, and find new paths. The process of opening locked doors and discovering hidden spaces maximizes the tension of survival in unpredictable situations.
In particular, the fact that every location could be a safe zone or the beginning of a new danger acts as a factor that maintains tension throughout the gameplay.

A heartfelt work from a Ukrainian indie studio
Painted Black Games is a studio founded by the development team behind the psychological thriller game ‘The Long Reach’.
Roman, who leads the development, stated, “This project is like the heart of our work,” adding, “We wanted to tell the story of how much strength a loved one can give to people living in uncertain times.”
The game’s publisher, Silver Lining Interactive, also stated that they were deeply impressed by the narrative and sentiment of the work. Producer Dan Fraser remarked, “This game is filled with the passion and sincerity of the development team,” adding that it is “a work that remains in your memory long after you finish playing.”

Future Games Showcase Receives Positive Reviews from Community and Media Following Unveiling
The latest trailer unveiled at the Future Games Showcase is attracting attention from the community and international media.
Players are particularly paying attention to the emotional pixel art, immersive atmosphere, and the story centered on the parent-child relationship. The currently released Steam and Itch.io demos are also receiving positive reviews, and the number of users looking forward to the official release is steadily increasing.
Positive reviews from media outlets specializing in indie games are also continuing. The Gaming Outsider praised the game, stating, “The charm of cozy horror that allows you to discover beauty even amidst the collapse of civilization stands out,” while Mezha, a Ukrainian gaming media outlet, introduced it as a noteworthy and highly anticipated indie title from a local developer.

Even amidst ruined streets, a collapsed civilization, and a world where endless threats repeat themselves, the only reason Catherine never gives up is to protect her beloved daughter.
