- The Aesthetic: Hand-drawn 2D animation inspired by the rubber-hose style of Cuphead.
- The Combat: Real-time timing prompts for attacks and blocks, reminiscent of Super Mario RPG.
- The Setting: A vibrant fantasy world deeply rooted in Latin American landscapes and culture.
- The Goal: Asteristic Game Studio seeks community support via Kickstarter to finalize development.
What happens when you mix the legendary DNA of Chrono Trigger and Vagrant Story with the fiery spirit of Brazilian folklore? You get Toada Brava. Developed by the Curitiba-based Asteristic Game Studio, this ambitious 2D RPG has officially moved into its next phase of development with a global crowdfunding call to action.
A Rebellion Born in the Cells of Santacrúz
The story follows Kako, a simple farm boy whose life is upended when the ruthless Duke Santacrúz seizes his family’s land for gold mining. After his mother, Matilda, is imprisoned for standing up to the tyrant, Kako embarks on a daring rescue mission that transforms into a full-scale rebellion. Alongside a ragtag group of heroes met behind bars, Kako must navigate a world where music is magic and timing is everything.
Combat Without Compromise
Toada Brava aims for a “condensed and punchy” experience, stripping away the filler often found in massive JRPGs.
- Seamless Transitions: Battles occur exactly where you stand on the map—no swirling screen transitions.
- Interactive Turns: Success depends on your rhythm. Nailing the timing on an attack increases damage, while a perfectly timed block can turn a lethal blow into a mere scratch.
- Musical Sorcery: Magic isn’t just a menu option; it’s a rhythmic performance using musical instruments to strike multiple foes simultaneously.

A Seven-Year Labor of Love
Lead developer Mateus Grazina has been refining the vision for Toada Brava since 2017. Having previously released titles like Dreaming Sarah and Dandy & Randy, Grazina is pouring his 15+ years of industry knowledge into this project. “We want to create a JRPG that feels like a playable cartoon but carries the distinct flavor of our own culture,” Grazina shared.
With over four years of active development already under its belt, the Kickstarter campaign will provide the final push needed for polish and content expansion.
